A study in UK not long ago showed that new borns that sleep in complete darkness (as opposed to using night light) are less likely to have short sightedness. This study excludes other factors, of course. I know a professional photographer who will not shoot a new born baby with a flash.
So, I think it's better to be safe, especially if it is a new born. Older child I think it's ok.
