    Heres my advice.
If ur wife is not the kind who's really into jewellery,diamonds..u know..that sorts..
Then always go for carats instead of clarity,color..cut..

What they'll always remember is the carat, the rest not so important..
So go get a bigger sized diamond while cutting down on the rest.

I can guarantee that the person who came up with the "2-3 months" rule is a woman! Personally I think that it is ridiculous to put some price tag on 'love' and I am sure that these rules are propagated through the media by jewelry companies to try to encourage me to be 'romantic' by digging out another credit card.

Decide what would be sensible to spend and just spend that. If your wife-to-be doesn't like it because you didn't spend enough money/diamond isn't big enough, then go find yourself another woman, she obviously loves you for all the wrong reasons.

One should be humane for the right reason but at the same time also understand the principal behind the notion "people are object".

heheh actaully if you read that in a magazine or some retail oriented site ...it usually is a "marketing" bent to it. If tomorrow they say 10 times your salary then how? heheheh.. Diamond has a very low resale value just in case anyone things it can also be an investment thingy or the woman things this could work to her advantage for her or both in case there is money problem in her or their lives together.

PLUS the most important thing...the bigger the diamond DOES NOT make for a lasting marriage nor a happy one....it is not a guarantee. This is another western marketing culture that is just getting so out of hand. A month's salary is the "right" amount to spent. indeed. What happent to feeling and making your lives together as one especially in this econoical climate where things are getting expensive and hard to find the means to buy the essential...on top of that...an "engagement ring" ...then we also have the diamond wedding ring and then the basic wedding bands for his and her too.

Frankly, I would buy something in the Modern tradition of proposal (abeit a western practice) but shuld it not be me to see what I can afford. If a girl were to suggest this to me and dictate the how big and how much to spend on this? I am asking her to walk down the aisle herself...think it is bad now...wait till she tie you down with a wedding band and then the real "bleeding of wallet" begins. Sorry no offence to the TS or anyone here. Search your heart and know your lover's true heart about how she feel about you and you about her. The ring is your symbol of your love..be it a diamond encrusted gold piece or a copper one if that be all you can offer her. What you have and what you will build together goes beyond that ring. It is about you two..it is not about "face" or each other families expectation of the other person you marry. IF they care so much about that...do you think they will care as much if it does not workout?

I have a friend who is divorce after 3 yrs... he is still repaying the loan for the wedding he spent...just because he had to please his in laws to make the wedding befitting their daughter. The ex-wife is not chipping in to pay for it right now... Not to put a wet blanket on the matter but yes marriage is a very special thing between one another but you still need to be pratical and aware and not let all the lovey dovey distract you from the facts of life. Even the govt had to set up pre-marraige consuls to prepare couple before they take the plunger together...there is a reason for all these. It can sometime start with just that ring.

Food for thought people...not trying to rain on our TS's parade. I do sincerely wish you well.
