    basically to get a good shot of smoke, u need to use 1 or 2 strobes, a macro lens and black background. after that some pp to play around with the colors and contrast. lighting is very impt. use incense. the smoke is more consistent and the studio will smell nice.

    To narrow it, as summaries from the urls generously shared by night86mare;

    clean lines and shapes - a) Lot of light at a small aperture (and thereby a deeper depth of
    field)
    b) fast shutter time (1/250 or faster)
    c) low ISO
    d) light used to expose the image comes from one studio flash unit
    fitted with a snoot and placed at the side or behind the smoke

    Setup should look like;

    unless ur smoke is gonna be huge ass stuff, i think macro would be more ideal for such shots.
