  1. #1

Default Cheap hotel in Hong Kong?

    Hi,

Heading out to Hong Kong for some shopping (for the first time)

Anyone know of a cheap but decent hotel to stay in? would be a bonus if it was in close proximity to camera shops such as Tin Cheung, Wing Shing, Mongkoc etc.

    Thanks

What is considered cheap. Cheap to one maybe expensive to another.

Btw, there is no such things as cheap and decent in HK.

    What is your budget?

Maybe I should have said cheap in the context for HK ,

About US$70-80 per night I guess.

    Anyone?

Harbour View International Hotel off Wan Chai area. (Just next to the Exibition Centre)

It's the former YMCA. Cheap, decent, clean and good!

    Around SGD$130.00

Travelling in HK is ver easy with MTR (very similiar to our MRTs)

you can check the flollowing sites for reference n map locations.

    www.asiatravel.com
    or
    www.asiatravelmart.com

As what godzilla says, the mtr is very convenient and cheap, so strongly suggest to find a hotel that is near a mtr station

if you must have a hotel, forget it, all hong kong hotels are damn pricey

if you don't mind a HOSTEL, you can look for causeway bay, and mirador mansions, there are some decent and very nicely done up ones.. the only problem is service in some cases, and the fact that you will actually be looking at living in a very dipilated building.

btw, from what i've heard, if you go this route, please DO NOT stay at chungking mansions.

you can check out the offerings on hostelworld.com.. mirador mansions is in tsim tsa tsui, just across the road from a mtr station, it doesn't get any more convenient than that

i will be trying out one of those at mirador mansions next week, will update when i'm back and tell about how it is

    1) I stayed at Mirador Mansions last year, an advice to you, double check your booking again before your departure. Their booking system is very manual, if you are unlucky your name might not appear on their crumpled piece of booking sheet eventhough you have paid your advance deposit. I was very lucky to find my name on the booking list, there were at least 10 backpackers stranded without a room or bed.

    2) Don't believe the pictures of their rooms on their website, its damn deceiving, they are good photographers.

    3) The building, ie. Mirador Mansions looks perfect for a haunted theme photoshoot, old and run down.

    4) You are right about it being conveniently located.

    5) If you arrived from the main road, Nathan Road, don't wait for the right hand side lift. That prehistoric lift take like decades to arrive and imagine fighting for a space with the rest of the people waiting. Walk further in and turn left, there is another lift near to the security guard post where the residents take.

    Have fun

thanks for the heads up will take note

we'll see, i booked one of the more expensive ones with pretty good reviews on the net (not just on hostel websites.. i noticed that there were complaints that the owners would do special favours or give discount only when customer promise to give good review on hostel website )

actually, most importantly, how is safety?

ah...I know which one you are staying USA Hostel right? hehe good luck, I also book the room with 'best view' but ended up in a room with 'no view' (no windows). I didn't complain because seeing so many backpackers stranded without a room and asking for refund, I quickly 'chopped' any room they gave me.

    Oh ..the room is SMALL

Safety wise I think it is alright, as long as you apply the usual common sense like do not leave your valuables unattended etc.

honestly I kinda like that building, its an unique experience. It looks like it is awaiting demolition and yet so many people are still staying inside.

By the way, in the morning when the sun shines on the building with all the luandry hanging outside, it looks pretty cool The building is like 4-sided and empty in the centre, if you know what I mean

One side of the building has a big lobang on the wall, looks like someone detonated a bomb there or something, so fun

    hoi, so smart!

i don't mind small room la.. and the room looks a lot better than some that i got in italy.. safety wise i also don't really care, but then my parents quite worried so later they will spend the whole trip kaobehing about my brilliant idea.. so must prepare first if not so good

fwah, got such problem ar.. hopefully will be lucky.. worse come to worse just find another place i guess.. view also not important.. i prefer nature views.. must see if can convince them to let me trek the mountain trails myself on one of the days

anyways, about mirador, yar, i saw pictures before, really damn scary.. but fun leh.. try once and save money to eat more dim sum

Try this as was suggested earlier. I was in HK last Nov and did my hotel booking through this site. They got some good deal there just need to look around.

*lol* Langham Place, Mongkok, is pretty convenient. A bit on the luxurious side Hotel has a shopping mall with many many photo opportunities (google it).

Walking distance to the Mongkok MTR station, Ladies Street, general shopping and most importantly the Electrical items street (Sai Yeung Choi St Sth).
