Default Just got my 5D MkII

Just got my hand on a full frame EOS, with 45 focus point, eye control, >15MP resolution...

April fools joke ? Not really. I just got a EOS3 about 1-2 weeks ago, only manage to find film to load into to try it out last weekend (by the numbers of store/7-eleven that don't sell film, and the funny way the cahsier stare at me when I ask if they sell film, you would had thought film had been extinct in Singapore for 20 years). And my immediate reaction is, just add a LCD screen to see what was captured on film, you have the perfect EOS5D Mk2, or is it EOS 3D ?

The size is great, the view finder is so bright I feel refreshed everytime I swtich from my 30D view finder to the EOS3. The focusing is fast, for a camera this old, it's amazing.

I just ordered a Plustek 7200dpi film scanner, so I am going to have a interim full frame digital that I had been craving for so long. Just need to tolerate the extra few trips to photo-lab & scanning. Still faster then waiting for Canon to wake up their idea and come up with something that can keep them ahead of the game from Nikon & Sony.

The only downside ? bloody ISO 200 only. Everytime I wanted to bump up the ISO to 12800 when the light falls, it put me back to reality that this is my EOS 3, and not EOS 3D.

I just ventured in to film photography too but mine is an eos 5. I'm really surprised at the amount of technology in my new toy too considering it was launched in 1992. A few thing eos 5 had that i really wish my dslr costing 10x as much had:

- eye controlled focus
- dof preview is activated not by a button but by staring at a dof "spot" in the viewfinder
- spot metering tied to the focus point you're using
- 0.73x magnification FF viewfinder AND in built flash.
- in built flash with zoomable head
- 5fps FF shutter. Can't believe that we had to wait until a 1dsmkIII before we got a FF dslr that can do 5fps
- AF assist lamp (not using the flash, but with a dedicated AF assist lamp. Like how nikon is doing it)

these are some of the things that come to mind, haven't fully explored it yet.

The EOS 5 is a great film camera! I bought mine in 1995 and it's still in my dry cabinet.

I don't know why Canon doesn't implement ECF in any of their DSLRs!

I'd love to have a shootout between the EOS 5 and the 5D, but no time these days (work, night class, family etc ...)

Furthermore, problem with film scanning is that it's a tedious process (I have an old dedicated Minolta film scanner), and the scans can come out pretty noisy (i.e. as compared to the 5D's smooth as silk images).

Just wondering, how many people here still shoot film? Due to the low demand for film slrs you can pick up a eos 1v for under 1k or eos 30 or eos 5 for under 200. Chopper, how much did you pay for your eos 3? Convenient to let us know?

after my dslr, I shot 2 rolls of film with my eos50, I just put the 2 rolls aside considering that I have to pay to print (just to see the crap I shoot) comparing to digital.....that I can still correct or dump if I dont like it or still post them on clubsnap or my own blog.

It just dont make economic sense for me to develop film anymore. (for that kind of standard I shoot, casual random street shooter without tripod & only with iso200 if film, of course no choice during the film days, treasured those travel shots, even played with cokin color filters, not these digital days) .....perhaps digital allows more challenging shots with room for correction or saving the shots, anytime & anywhere...

I started photography 12 years ago with my EOS500, subsequently upgraded to EOS50. I was using it for 6-7 years, until D60-20D-30D came along. EOS50 is ok, but with the 3 focusing point, it's a bit restrictive in my view. So I eventually sold it off due to under utilisation.

I got the EOS 3 for $450, with the grip. I think it's worth every cents, considering the 5D with lesser capabilities (other then the sensor) cost 10x that few months ago. My plustek scanner is on its way, hope it meet my expectation.

I started using film camera years back. Still remember the first film camera bought was Canon EOS 500 SLR. Soon, upgraded to EOS 3, and still keeping it till now. Ocassionally, will use it for B&W photography with my favourite Ilford film.

Same sentiment here. I'm ok with my 30D now, but couldn't really justify an upgrade to 5D just for the marginal IQ/ISO improvement, similar AF performance. Really looking forward to EOS3 equivalent performance in terms of AF in the next D version. Come to think of it, Nikon D3 really ideal, minus the 10fps (don't need that), the bulk and high price.

The frustration with Canon is they had all the technology ready, but they purposely hold back the offering so that they don't over offer. Now they are eating humble pie with Nikon & Sony going all out and surpass them. Lesson learn here, a company that worry more about internal canibalisation instead of external competitor will eventually learn the lesson in a hard way.

Not as bad compare to now, same depreciation happens on digital model within 2 years, instead of 7.

But seriously, the beauty of it is the amount of good staff we can get from the used market... I always see myself as contributing to the environment by recycling.
