Default Canon 40D mirror lock-up for multiple exposure

Hi,
I saw the specification of Canon 40D mention that the Mirror lock-up can support multiple exposures (Mirror lock-up (once or multiple exposures)), but I can't find anything on it in the Canon 40D manual.

Anyway, my understanding of mirror lock-up for multiple exposure is that the mirror lock-up once and do multiple exposure. Is this correct and can this be done in Canon 40D?? If yes, how to activate it as I can't find it in the manual.

By the way, I'm currently consider whether to get the Canon 40D or the coming Canon 450D. If Canon 40D can do the type of mirror lock-up for multiple exposure I mentioned above and Canon 450D cannot, I'll have one more good reason to convince myself to get the Canon 40D.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Mirror locking in 40D is enabled via Custom Functions
when you enable mirror locking you can shoot only one exposure.

Refer to Page 98 of 40D user manual

does your multiple exposures refer to bracketing or just simply a number of shots?

Not for barcketing... just simply a number of shots. The specifaction in a lots of website including dpreview indicate this: Mirror lock-up (once or multiple exposures), but I can't find it in the manual.

Anyway, it's for planetary/lunar photography where I need a lot of shots to stack. Since the focal length will be very long, I need to use mirror lock up to reduce vibration, but it'll take a very long time to reach the number of shots I required using the normal mirror lockup method and will also reduce the life of the shutter. So it'll be excellent if the mirror can lock up once and take multiple shots.

By the way, I notice in the manual that you can take continuous shot during "live view" mode 1, so does any mechincal parts that will cause vibration move when shooting in this mode?? May be this is the "Mirror lock-up multiple exposures" mode??

Hope Canon 40D users here can help me check this out.

Thanks and have a nice day.

yeah. was abt to say u can use live view to shoot multiple shots with mirror lock up.

there will be no movement during liveview mirror up.

Live view works the same.

there still will be minimal vibration due to the opening and closing of the shutter in MLU and Live View. but it won't affect much (if at all).

Hi,
OK. Thanks. Now is to wait till Canon 450D is out and see whether it got this feature. If no, my decision will be easier and hopefully the Canon 40D price will drop further...

Thanks again and have a nice day.

I don't use the MLU function at all, since the LiveView works just as well if not better and it's easier to access. With MLU, once you've tripped the shutter, the viewfinder goes blank. Both LiveView and long exposures eat a lot of batteries so do be prepared to bring spares.

Whether you lock the mirror up once and take multiple exposures with the mirror still up, or whether you lock the mirror up each time before an exposure, the amount of wear is the same. I don't see where your concept of having to lock up the mirror before each shot will reduce the life of the shutter in any way.

yep. the sound of the mirror lockup is not the sound of the shutter. the shutter isnt working the moment u lock up the mirror. at most u get problems like mirror drop out from certain batches of 5D.
