Hi,
I saw the specification of Canon 40D mention that the Mirror lock-up can support multiple exposures (Mirror lock-up (once or multiple exposures)), but I can't find anything on it in the Canon 40D manual. Anyway, my understanding of mirror lock-up for multiple exposure is that the mirror lock-up once and do multiple exposure. Is this correct and can this be done in Canon 40D?? If yes, how to activate it as I can't find it in the manual. By the way, I'm currently consider whether to get the Canon 40D or the coming Canon 450D. If Canon 40D can do the type of mirror lock-up for multiple exposure I mentioned above and Canon 450D cannot, I'll have one more good reason to convince myself to get the Canon 40D. ![]() Thanks and have a nice day. |

when you enable mirror locking you can shoot only one exposure. Refer to Page 98 of 40D user manual |

Hi,
Anyway, it's for planetary/lunar photography where I need a lot of shots to stack. Since the focal length will be very long, I need to use mirror lock up to reduce vibration, but it'll take a very long time to reach the number of shots I required using the normal mirror lockup method and will also reduce the life of the shutter. So it'll be excellent if the mirror can lock up once and take multiple shots. By the way, I notice in the manual that you can take continuous shot during "live view" mode 1, so does any mechincal parts that will cause vibration move when shooting in this mode?? May be this is the "Mirror lock-up multiple exposures" mode?? Hope Canon 40D users here can help me check this out. Thanks and have a nice day. |

Live view works the same.
there still will be minimal vibration due to the opening and closing of the shutter in MLU and Live View. but it won't affect much (if at all).

Hi,
OK. Thanks. Now is to wait till Canon 450D is out and see whether it got this feature. If no, my decision will be easier and hopefully the Canon 40D price will drop further... ![]() Thanks again and have a nice day. |

I don't use the MLU function at all, since the LiveView works just as well if not better and it's easier to access. With MLU, once you've tripped the shutter, the viewfinder goes blank. Both LiveView and long exposures eat a lot of batteries so do be prepared to bring spares.
