It's a question that I've in my mind for a long time now. Just have the urge to ask the question since I am contemplating if I should get the 18-55mm IS and 50-250mm IS although I am already covered in that range with the 17-40 f/4 L, 24-105f/4 IS and 70-200 f/4 L IS.
The reason of which basically are at times I just want to travel light, also when there is a tendency when the lens maybe subjected to damaged eg Hiking. Two reasons that I am still considering and has not rush out to buy them being a possible inferior pic quality as well as the neccessity to spend extra cash ? ![]() Mind sharing your thought on this issue? Are you too having both L and non L covering the same range? Or if you are in the same dilemma as I am? |

sharp wide open at all focal lengths, good colour and contrast. brought it (the non-OS version) along for a mission trip to Cebu and shot wide open everytime...no probs at all.Last edited by Isaiahfortythirtyone; 1st April 2008 at 11:54 AM. |

Here, you have a situation where good built quality comes in handy and you are thinking of buying alternatives...... |

With L lens will travel.
My backup lens are Canon 18-55mm, Sigma 70-300mm & 28-70mm f/2.8, when I travel they stay at home most of the time (90% of the time). The cost of going back to oversea locations to re-take the shoots will cost much much more that the L lens.

aiyah, you just itchy la.
but i have a 28-70L and a 28-75SP. i use the L when i'm shooting for events, and the SP when i'm travelling or want to go light. however, as opposed to your situation, both the lenses give me almost similar results. in your case, buying these ef-s lenses would mean a step down in imamge quality. my suggestion is to pass. |

Well, I have a 17-40L and also a 18-55 IS now. When I am on business travel, I either travel with my fuji F31fd or my old 300D with a 18-55IS, which weighs in at only 700+ g. My 40D and 17-40L comes in at over 1.1kg. The IS comes in useful now and then.
The 18-55IS is quite a decent lens. I also have a 70-200 4/L non-IS but I can't see myself doing holidays with a lens that weighs 600+g. |

That's quite true. Was in the States last year, brought my Tamron 17-50, Sigma 12-24, 85 f/1.8, 70-200 f4, 580 EXII and Tripod with me! It was manageable as long as you decide first which lens and accessories you want to bring along each day first! Ended up the 70-200 was the least used. (20% of time) And the flash almost for like 5% of shots only!

I considered getting these 2 lenses for travelling, especially to Europe where DSLRs are targets, losing a small camera with cheap lenses isnt so bad.
This set is about affordability and portability, with reasonable pic quality. But I wont be getting this set for one reason - the PnS Lumix FX-36 25mm wide!

different lenses for different needs, i guess.
if you feel the need for it, then buy lah. don't like, can sell so cheapskates like me can buy. but seriously, i'm not too worried about 'image quality'. half the people can't see the difference, and the other half who can, are not paying you anyway. so yes, i'd bring my kit lens out for trekking and all if there's a chance of getting things broken. but most importantly it's for the weight-savings. 500g of lens could mean 500g of noodles..enough for 6 meals. but then again, i bought the lenses to be used, so i don't really baby them and talk to them everynight before tucking them into the dry cabinet for the night. oh wait, i don't even have a dry cabinet! hahaha Last edited by antacid; 4th April 2008 at 11:13 PM. |

If you are really serious about shooting you would not be worried about equipment load, if you are worried then just get the megapixel handphone.....definitely lighter and call home also......plus record video......and do not need extra bag.....
