According to a friend who tried both, the Sigma 70-300 is actually sharper than the 55-250. This EF-S is probably the cheapest IS lens other than the 18-55, guess what you pay is what you get if you minus off the price for IS.

Did your friend try the older 55-250, that had no IS? The new IS one is really quite a different animal compared to the old model.

55-250 IS is sharp but not contrasty. IS really works. There's a bit of flare at 55mm but it's easily corrected with a hood.
![]() Camera: Canon EOS 400D Digital Exposure: 0.167 sec (1/6) [IS - on] Aperture: f/5 Focal Length: 109 mm ISO Speed: 1600 Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV Flash: Flash did not fire I wouldn't recommend the Sigma. It starts a bit too long for a crop body. It's also not a very sharp piece of glass. The only 70-300 I would consider would be the EF 70-300 DO IS USM. (: Now we're talkin'!

BTW your photo is not bad. Softer contrast is at times a good thing. I actually shoot with Neutral, -1 contrast for a gentler, neutral feel, but if I want more punch I'll bring it up in post. |
