one of the most common question within the subforum. do read the sticky threads.

know your camera well. that'll be the basics of basics. that's when the manual comes in handy

How about attending a photographer workshop? I think that's the best idea to get a guided introduction into taking pictures. Otherwise chances are good that you'll end up either frustrated or only using the Automatic Mode of your cam.
Objectifs offer workshops but there are also others, just check the forum here or ask Google.

I found this very useful when I first started learning
    http://web.canon.jp/imaging/enjoydslr/part2/2Ab.html

I know you're a Nikon user, but just put the brand difference aside for long enough to look at that site... lots of other pages to look at if you want.

Easy.... go to the nearest library, and you will find a LOT of books explaining all aspects and terms of photography...

I hope you can find a library and the "Photography" section there without any help

Sorry for being sarcastic it's my second nature... Just consider it a joke to jump start your journey of learning...

    Btw, welcome to the jungle...

    My two cents.

look at a lot of photos,
    take a lot of photos
    and you will improve

and always, always, always try something new.

for landscapes, there are some good sites you can look at to get an idea how to compose wide scenes.. people will tell you that it is because they have a lot of landscapes wherever they are, but eventually if you put in the effort to explore singapore's coast you'll see that it's nonsense.

read the user manual in detail.. very important..

then look at more pictures.. take more pictures.. review more pictures..

and like the others mentioned.. a pop by at the library to get books on photography techniques is great.. but other than that if you are lazy like me.. google is your best friend..

p.s. thanks for the great links night86mare bro~

Honestly, the starting point is your Camera Manual. Try to read it and know it inside out.

The above link is very good. It is targeted mainly for Canon users, but owners of other systems will benefit from it too.

Lots of information and text to read ...

Don't worry about memorizing the manual and every camera functions! Just try to get some basics first, then start shooting. Then you'll know what went wrong and right, and what to do next time. Then you'll start flipping the manual to find out how to adjust more functions. Go shoot!
