Wow how did you manage to catch the subject so sharp and yet the background so blur? I tried panning but I always pan too fast or slow end up the subject is slightly blur, but not blurrer than the background. Nice pics really!!

First I tried a few shutter speeds - 1/30, 1/60 and 1/15. After a few test shots, the shutter speed 1/15 work best coz the cyclists are not riding very fast.

Then, I find a suitable background. In this part of east coast park, the suitable backgnd area located between a lamp post and a large tree. Tat mark my arc of fire.

Next, I focus the subject before they enter my killing zone. I follow the moment and direction of the subject until they move into the tree or the lamp post. Then I release the trigger.

I got 5 decent shots after standing there for 1 and 1/2 hrs feeding mosquitos.

Panning is not easy. Like Fragnatic said, practise, practise and practise!

1/15 handheld is certainly not easy. Great shots you got there especially #3.

[quote=fuschia;3885178]My subject is not very sharp.. cant seem to get it right.

You can start with subject moving from left to right or left to right. In this way, you are dealing with horizontal moment. IMHO, it is easier to get the subject sharp

Btw do you really need a lazer to point at the subject to improve panning? Isn't the viewfinder looks like a crosshair for you to aim? Interested to know if the lazer does improve panning. Tks!

IMHO, it might be easier (only in a relative sense) if your subject moves along the same focal plane. For example, your second image or the images from the TS. Subjects that are moving towards or away might prove more difficult (or impossible?). For faster moving subjects (motor vehicles), try a faster shutter speed (1/60, 1/100).

My $0.02 (from a guy that is trying to pan his kid and failing miserably so far...)
