    RAW. Clarity and PP options.

Was wondering..... have anyone done comparison between jpeg fr camera and jpeg converted fr raw? Any noticeable difference in IQ? TIA

I would say jpeg from raw is definitely better if you mess up the exposure etc. Can fix the picture better. Otherwise... *shrug*

It depends on the brand. Certain brands supposedly are near hopeless with JPEGs generated by the camera itself but have great image quality as long as you use the RAW files.

    RAW, Raw, Raw
Then if I want jpeg, tiff or whatever no problem. But if I shoot in jpeg, then I'm stuck. Just more choices in Raw.

Big Difference. Not at all the same. PS you can layer, 3rd party plug-ins etc.
LR you can manage all your photos in a glance, edit etc.
Try the demo. You'll get more info here as well

    @Inukshuk
thanks for the explantation and the link, so LR is something like ACDSee..
Adobe itself have Adobe Bridge to manage photos, but can't do professional editing..

Now I had ACDsee and since i use sony alpha, i got the software from them (Picture Motion Browser, Image Data Lightbox and Image Data Converter). Is LR is the best among those?

    thx.

Definitely RAW for me. Cos more options to adjust exposure, white balance, picture styles, etc in a more non destructive way.
With the prices dropping in memory cards and hdd, no problem with file size. Plus I think its best to shoot RAW since most of us are using DSLR. Take advantage of that!
The power of the L, in the palm of my hands.

How about folks going on trips? Do you shoot raw/raw+jpeg and shoot less? Or compensate with 3x or 4x the amount of cards? Or shoot jpeg and switch to raw for tricky scenes?

Raw still for me. Got portable harddisk

Of course doesn't equate to one going around and shoot aimlessly like a wandering tourist

The two best softwares that do all in one are LR and Aperture. Aperture is only for the new Macs and LR is compatible for Mac and PC. As mentioned the best way is to try the demo.

RAW for me too - Lightroom is great for fast workflow. Actually, main reason is that by using JPEG, even at the finest setting, shows some artifacts.

    Depends on the occasion really.

When shoot is really important and the tolerance for error is lower, then RAW. Or when I have something else in mind, like generating a HDR image from a single RAW file.

    JPEGs definitely help save space.

Use a program that can read your raw file, Photoshop or Lightroom for example, or the program that came with your camera.
Edit the picture in that program and then export as JPEG.

More important to shoot raw then as you can pp after you get back. Get a portable storage and more memory cards. On a dedicated photo trip, I can shoot up to 12GB a day so I can never bring enough cards with me - i only have about 90 GB in cards!

90 GB of cards is a LOT The initial cost for a portable storage quite heavy though. But hmmm seems like the only choice for a long trip. Buying enough cards probably cost more.
