Thread: Could I do an foggy by using a flash?

  1. #1

Question Could I do an foggy by using a flash?

For example, the lower second half of this photo..
My objective is the foggy rocks..

I expose it by 30s (with -2 gray filter).. expecting the waves to create this foggy look..
In the end, I fire the flash (with -2 FEC) to illuminate the socks..

    Will my idea work?

all the while i thought flash is to freeze...

probably good if u can get super soft light... or use smoke.

it will not make any different if your flash is fire at the front or rear curtain, since the rock is not moving.

it depends on what the exposure ratio of the water and the rock, is two stops just nice or too little effect? we can't tell now, cos are the scene front lighting or back lighting by the moon? we do not know.

that's acheive by hdr - quite simple. Or you can use ND filter to nail it. no need flash lah

i knew how they did HDR.. and my GIMP's capacity in this is not so nice.
I am concerned is the reflected ambient (moon or lamp) light off rock is a few stops less than water..

again i am concerned is a flash might just freeze the water and give unwanted surface as well..
