In the case of electronic type, it switches on and off by itself, or in the case of dessicant type, it switches between heating and dehumidifying cycle to regulate the humidity so you just leave the main switch on and don't worry about that.

It is meant to be left on 24/7 to regulate humidity etc just like what others said. The only time it is switched off is when you have to move it to elsewhere in the house.

Have my drybox for over 10 years. Never off except for power failure or when I moved my house.

Sorry just to borrow thread, if a camera that has fungus before, but manually cleaned away, will it spread around to the other cameras within the dry cabinet?

Fungus spores are everywhere.. Yes, even in the air you're breathing right now unless you're in a class 1000 clean room.

So the ans is obvious. Just keep your dry cabinet on and nothing will happen.

Either the cabinet's not opened at all or he's staying in a country with low humidity.

As I know, almost all dry cabinet now consume power at rate 5W peak. Assume that the cabinet run continuously, then 1 month consume 3600 Wh or 3.6 kWh. With the electricity rate now at 0.23 SGD for 1kWh, total electricity consumption is less than 1 dollar per month, so do not switch it off as you can save electricity by some more efficient ways.

Is there any cheap dry cabinets for a newbie with just a D60 kit? 30L enuf? Saw one at Carrefour for $109. Got any other cheaper types?

Also, does dry cabinet run hot? Can I put anything on top of it?

How cheap also depends on what capacity u're looking for or what capacity suits your equipment needs. Dry cabinets do not run hot and it's safe to put things on top, i put my battery chargers on top though.

No it doesn't run hot. How the electronic ones work is that there is a piece of thermoelectric element. When a current is passed through the element, Peltier effect causes one side to cool while the other side to warm up. This element is mounted with the cool side inside the cabinet and the warm side coupled to the metal housing. Condensation from the cool side is collected and channelled outside the cabinet where the heat from the warm side will evaporate the water into the air outside.
