Yup. The old Minolta series was called Alpha in Japan, Maxxum outside Japan.

I thought I saw the 600mm F4 Apo G in the lens line up inside the commercial...

If remember correctly, the Minolta 7000 was the first AF SLR in the world. Big full page advertisements on the Straits Times during those days. Hands on a classmate's father's set and was impressed by it's AF. Made me resolved to own a minolta SLR when I have the capability. Wanted that camera so much during those days but was impossible for me to come out with $1K since I was only a kid then.

really? that model was the first AF? i know for a fact Minolta came up w the first AF camera, but didn't know it's this model.
When i was purchasing my first film body, and handled Minolta's, i know it was the fastest available. it really delivers more value at every price point compared to the other brands.

Even the point and shoots were well designed and ergonomical.

Having said that, in my opinion Sony still has a long way to live up to the Minolta legacy.

Sony's just getting started... They've only been in this for 2 years and look at how much they're already done.

That was based on memory. Did a search and found on Wikipedia, it state that Minolta 7000 is the first SLR with a integrated AF motor and film advance in the body. Other brands had AF SLR but the AF motor is not in the body but in the lens. Seems Minolta is the one that tend to put features into the body instead of the lens. It was AF then and Anti-Shake now.

The other brands had focus lock confirm, but it was Minolta that put in an AF engine.
