Gillett finally breaks silence over co-owner Hicks

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has finally broken his silence on his strained relationship with Tom Hicks.

Gillett has not made a public statement on the current takeover turmoil at the club since the controversial financial repackaging of the loans Hicks and Gillett took out to buy the club last year.

Gillett's son Foster - a board member - was withdrawn from the day-to-day operations at Anfield as Gillett prepared to sell his 50% stake to Dubai International Capital.

Gillett, who also owns the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey club, was speaking at a sports conference in California when - answering a question on whether he would remain a co-owner of Liverpool - he said: 'I would say, choose your partners wisely.'

That remark, in answer to a question from Abraham Madkour, editor of a sports business journal in the US, explained much about the differences between Hicks and Gillett.

Gillett was appearing at the IMG world sports conference in California.

He also said: 'He (Tom Hicks) is a great guy - but he has just got a different perspective on the media.'

Hicks has this week been critical of DIC's use of the media to support their plans to buy out Gillett.

Dallas-based Hicks has criticised DIC's tactics and terminated talks with the Dubai-based sports empire on Monday.

This followed his complaints about leaked documents and comments from DIC that implied they would want management control despite only buying a 49% stake.

He was also upset with what was considered triumphant comments that suggested DIC would soon buy his stake.

For Gillett to suggest he did not choose his partner wisely when he bought the club from former chairman David Moores says much about the current situation.

Gillett initially wanted to buy the club on his own, but brought in Hicks' financial muscle when he could not do the deal himself.

As for the CL, what I'd love to see:

    Quarters:
    * Arsenal - Schalke
    * Mancs - Barca
    * Pool - Chelsea (here's Grant's chance to do what Mourinho couldn't)
    * Roma - Fenerbahce (there has to be 1 good, non-EPL team in the semi's)

    Semis:
    * Pool - Schalke (yes, Schalke upends Gunners)
    * Roma - Mancs (sweeeeet revenge time...)

    Final
    * Pool - Roma

    And try this Premiership Predictor:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...or/default.stm

    My results:
    Man Utd 88
    Arsenal 84
    Chelsea 79
    Liverpool 77
    Everton 71
    Aston Villa 67
    Portsmouth 66
    Blackburn 60
    Man City 60
    Tottenham 53
    West Ham 52
    Birmingham 40
    Newcastle 39
    Middlesbrough 38
    Reading 36
    Bolton 35
    Wigan 29
    Sunderland 29
    Fulham 22
    Derby 12
I think somewhere between 73 to 77 is most likely where we'll finish.

73 assumes we win 5, draw 2, lose 2 - looks like a plausible scenario to me, especially if we continue to go further in the CL, and if we're pretty assured that nobody can catch us for the final CL qualifying spot.

77 assumes we win 7, lose 2, or win 6, draw 3 - could happen if we build on our win streak and let our momentum carry us through the rest of the season. I'd consider it a very good finish if we notched 77 points. Anything more than that would be a bonus.

    British clubs await European fate

An unprecedented four English clubs await the quarter-final draw for the Champions League on Friday at 1200 GMT.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United join Barcelona, Roma, Schalke 04 and Fenerbahce in the hat.

There are no seedings and no country protection, meaning the English clubs could be drawn against each other.

The semi-final pairings will also be decided, while Rangers will learn their last-eight opponents in the Uefa Cup when the draw is made at 1300 GMT.

Rangers will hope to avoid tournament favourites Bayern Munich, while Sporting, Fiorentina, Getafe, Bayer Leverkusen, PSV and Zenit St Petersburg are the other teams lying in wait.

Walter Smith's side are the last remaining British representative in the Uefa Cup after Tottenham and Everton suffered agonising defeats on penalties on Wednesday, while a 1-0 defeat for Bolton confirmed their exit to Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

English teams have proved unstoppable so far in the Champions League and this year is the first in which four clubs from the same country have reached the last eight.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists he is not worried about coming up against a domestic rival.

"We will relish the chance to face another English team in the quarter-finals if that happens," said Ferguson.

But Chelsea captain John Terry, whose side have lost to Liverpool in the semi-finals in two of the last three seasons, would prefer to avoid English opposition - at least for now.

"Hopefully we can avoid other English teams but if we are drawn together we have to beat them," he said.

"We've missed out in this competition on a few occasions and we want to make the final step and get our hands on the trophy."

The success of the Premier League's 'Big Four' has raised hopes of an all-English final for the first time in history.

But Spanish giants Barcelona are among the other four teams hoping to prevent such an event.

The former champions, who have slipped back in the race for La Liga, eased past Celtic in the last round and have won all their matches except two in this year's competition.

Roma ensured Italy have one representative in the last eight with a surprise win over Real Madrid.

They will be hoping to avoid Manchester United after suffering a 7-1 drubbing at Old Trafford in last year's quarter-finals.

Fenerbahce and Schalke are through to the last eight for the first time in their history.

The Turkish champions came through a thrilling last-16 tie against Sevilla on penalties, while Schalke also needed penalties to upset twice former champions Porto.

    LIVERPOOL vs. reading

    Anfield
    Saturday, 15 March
    Kick-off: 1500 GMT

Champions League quarter-finalists Liverpool are THE form team in the Premier League. The midweek conquerors of Inter Milan have won their last six in league and cup, and are vying for a fifth straight maximum in the league.

Liverpool have scored at least three goals in each of their last four league outings, and have totalled 13 goals in those wins, but suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at Reading in December.

Reading are chasing a 25th Premier League victory under Steve Coppell, and the third in a row; having beaten Middlesbrough (a) and Manchester City (h) after suffering eight successive league losses.

This match pits the clubs to have joint most draws (Liverpool 11) and the equal least (Reading, four). It also brings together the second most infrequent losers (Reds, three) with the second most frequent (Royals, 17).

Reading have not won in the North-West this season, and have lost their last four visits to the region.

These clubs are meeting for the third time this season. Reading won the reverse league fixture, having earlier been knocked out of the Carling Cup by the Reds. Those two matches produced 10 goals.

    something interesting...

    KEY PLAYER NOTES

    LIVERPOOL

Fernando TORRES is Liverpool's top scorer with 26 goals, and their leading marksman in the Premier League with 19.

TORRES needs one goal to become only the second player to score at least 20 Premier League goals for Liverpool in a season. Robbie Fowler scored 25 in 1994-95, and 28 in 1995-96.

The Spanish striker has scored 89% of his league goals at Anfield (17). No other player has scored as many Premier League goals in front of their home supporters this season.

Goalkeeper Jose REINA is the only remaining player to have been on the field for every minute of every one of Liverpool's Premier League matches this season.

Default Re: THIS IS ANFIELD!! - LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB! Season XVI

Let's get ready to GUESS GUESS GUESS!

    Correct Score Prediction = 3points!

    Correct 1st Scorer for LFC = 1point!

Correct Last Scorer for LFC = 1point!

Hat-Trick Hero Perfect Guess Guess Guess! = 5points!

so in any game, the max point a participant can net is a total of 10points.

    Sorting Out the Grey Areas.

1). in the event of 1-0 end result, the 1st scorer will be taken as the last scorer even though the participant might haf anticipated 2-0 or 22-0 and haf listed someone else as the last scorer.

2). the prediction is good till the Final Whistle, which includes Extra-time but not Penalty Shootout.
