by saying lack of protection means nobody can touch him and he can let himself fall in the penalty area n get a penalty?

    HICKS TERMINATES DIC TALKS

Liverpool's co-owner Tom Hicks has thrown the future of the club back into turmoil by terminating discussions with Dubai International Capital (DIC).

In a shock move, the Texan business tycoon broke off talks with DIC, who had been confident of sewing up a deal to buy out 49 per cent of co-owner George Gillett's 50 per cent stake.

Hicks had to give the go-ahead for that move - but instead he has exercised his right of veto, saying he was unwilling to manage the club with DIC "by committee".

DIC said they had no comment to make, but sources close to the deal believe Hicks' statement does not necessarily mean the end of the story and the investment arm of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, could yet clinch a stake in the club.

Hicks' statement read: "Based on a meeting held earlier today in Dubai between my representatives and officials of Dubai International Capital LLC, as well as other recent contacts between us and them, I have decided to terminate any further discussions with DIC regarding their possible purchase of a minority stake in Kop and, in turn, in the club.

"DIC made it clear that if they invested in the club, they would want it to be managed by committee.

"Based on my 13 years of successful experience as an owner of professional sports teams, and based in particular on the situation at Liverpool Football Club over the past year, it is clear to me that such a committee approach would not be in the best interest of Kop, of the club or of the club's loyal and passionate supporters.

"Accordingly, I have decided to exercise my right under the Kop Football (Holdings) Limited partnership agreement to veto any sale of any portion of Kop and the club to DIC."

Hicks added there were other alternatives to pursue.

He said: "I and my colleagues and representatives will continue to explore a number of other options with regard to the ownership of Kop and the club aimed at achieving an appropriate ownership, financial and organisational structure for Kop and the club over the long term."

The only chance of a deal being rekindled is if Hicks' statement is merely an attempt to force DIC and Gillett to accept his terms.

A DIC spokesman said only: "We have no comment to make."

Either way, the relationship between the parties appears to have broken down - something that could be a problem if they were to be co-owners of the club in the future.

As far as Liverpool are concerned however, it is back to square one with Hicks and Gillett at loggerheads - even more so now the Texan has vetoed the sale - and there are only 17 months until the 350million loan the Americans took out in January has to be refinanced again.

Furthermore, another loan of around 300million will have to be taken out to finance the building of the new stadium at Stanley Park.

    MANCINI PLAYS DOWN REDS TEST

Internazionale coach Roberto Mancini has moved to take some of the importance out of Tuesday night's Champions League clash with Liverpool, claiming there would be "no drama" if his side were to be knocked out.

Liverpool arrive at the San Siro with a two-goal lead from the first leg at Anfield and are firm favourites to complete the job on Tuesday.

And Mancini is preparing for the worst while reiterating that defeat would not compromise the work done so far by his side who lead Serie A by six points with 11 matches to play.

"I don't think that a whole season can rest on one single game," he said.

"It will be a difficult evening, but we do have a chance of doing it. Whatever the result, our season will continued and it does not end on Tuesday."

The Nerazzurri celebrated their 100th anniversary on Sunday, but there were no gifts given to Mancini from the club's treatment room.

Only Cristian Chivu has recovered to join the remainder of the squad which defeated Reggina 2-0 on Saturday, while Marco Materazzi will be suspended for the game after his red card from the first leg.

Mancini has yet to come to terms with Materazzi's first-half dismissal in Liverpool, a decision which he believes contributed to making the situation on Tuesday night so delicate.

"Each game has its own story and so we will have to see how this one goes," said Mancini.

"It is not going to be easy because we had to play there for 60 minutes with 10 men and this put us in danger.

"They were lucky in the first half in that we had one man less, but then they are a strong team and I don't think it is any coincidence that they become an even bigger team for the big matches."

That is precisely what Inter have done throughout the current Serie A campaign, beating Roma, AC Milan and Fiorentina on their way to opening up their lead at the top of Serie A.

With tough fixtures against Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina still to come, Mancini is not expecting an easy ride on the domestic front, which perhaps explains his ease at accepting his side may no longer be in the Champions League.

"This season is not going to be like the last one and it will be decided at the end," he said.

"Clubs with a history of 100 years like Inter, who have played thousands of games in Europe cannot think of it as a drama if we go out early.

"We have a difficult season - a very difficult season."

But even in adversity, Mancini expects his side to give it one last shot and attempt to make history in a competition which can be full of surprises.

"I am not at all pessimistic and I believe that chances do exist," he said.

"There have been lots of evenings in the Champions League or UEFA Cup when big leads have been overturned.

"Inter has got to play a perfect game without giving Liverpool much room. We have got to give our maximum and of course we risk going out - when two big clubs like this play, then of course there is a risk, but anything is possible."

    RAFA FOCUSED ON INTER TEST

Rafael Benitez insists he will not allow the latest twist in the club's takeover saga to affect preperation for their bid to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Liverpool manager already had enough on his plate as his team flew out from a stormy Merseyside in the hope of completing victory over Inter Milan, with the decision to leave midfielder Xabi Alonso behind to be with his girlfriend, who had gone into labour.

But such is the amazing soap opera that has overwhelmed Liverpool this season, Benitez and his squad had barely touched down before co-owner Tom Hicks was announcing on the club's own website he was breaking off negotiations with Dubai International Capital over the sale of a majority share of the club.

So when Benitez reached the San Siro for his press conference, the question was more about keeping his players' concentration on the match rather than what might be happening to their employers in Dallas, Dubai or London.

With Liverpool 2-0 ahead from the first leg and on the brink of making it four Premier League clubs in the last eight, Benitez was very clear in his objectives.

He said: "My reaction to this news is to concentrate on my side scoring goals to beat Inter Milan.

"We are thinking only about the game. The aim is to do what we have been doing before against Inter, and we know that if we score then we win the tie."

On the late decision of Alonso to stay behind in Liverpool with his girlfriend, Benitez said: "Xabi wanted to stay behind. He had said he would come if things were okay, but we couldn't wait, wait, wait, and I now have to use my squad."

Benitez was able to confirm Javier Mascherano's appearance in the squad after he recovered from a groin injury, and the Argentinian is clearly most welcome in the camp under the circumstances.

He will slot straight back into the side, with the prospect of Lucas Leiva also keeping his place in midfield.

Benitez is also considering using Peter Crouch in attack, saying: "He is a player that Inter are not used to facing."

But whatever side the Spaniard puts out, the keys to success here are surely Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, who have hit 44 goals between them this term and who their manager describes as "both being on fire".

The Italians are clearly concerned about the prolific partnership, having seen on TV a catalogue of goals from the pair over the weekend. Their questions were all about Liverpool's star players.

Maybe it is good the worrying debate over Liverpool's future seems to go over the heads of the Milan media.

And Benitez is just concentrating on taking Liverpool into the European Cup last eight for the 12th time in their history.

He said: "We have great confidence. When we played Inter in the first game we had just been beaten by Barnsley. Now we face them after five successive victories.

"We are playing well, and we will not just be defending. It it is impossible for us to defend for a long time against such a great team.

"We will be looking to score, to hit on the break. I believe that Torres is the ideal player for this, if we score one then we will surely be through."

And Benitez knows at the back he has 30 year-old Jamie Carragher, who will be setting a club record of 100 European appearances for Liverpool.

Benitez said of his defender: "He has the right mentality for this type of game. He has been a very important player for us in the past and will continue to do so in the future."
