Default Nikon Ads

Here is a nice ad by Nikon on Popular Photography:
"No digital SLR on the planet could take this shot, so we built one."

i always like some realism in commercials if the statement is not just out for humor. how is the statement true? no other DSLR can take such a photo? why?

on a serious note, it probably requires decent AF locking, plus a high iso just to capture that. probably more than iso6400 considering the noise seen on the body of the bike

The reason for the statement is because of the setup and conditions - extremely low light levels, high shutter speed, ISO 6400, 9fps, 14mm, camera was remotely operated wirelessly. Think Nikon could have done a better job of explaining why they made that statement though.

not really. i dun think all dslrs can do that. but if the higher end models from other brands can also do that, then nikon should not make this kind of qualifiable statement.

by the way, i'm also a nikon user too, if any questions is raised.

do you have any experience of estimating how close the camera needs to be from the subject to shot that? just curious about the take.

very close i reckon, judging from the background, a wide angle lense used, not a telephoto

You can take a look at the on location gallery photos and video of exactly how they set it up at the website shown in the ad - you'll see that the bikes are really close (think the guy's knee scrapes past less than a metre to the camera)

BTW, settings were 1/5000s, ISO 6400, 14mm, f/4.

you're cool! thanks for your research! judging from the pic itself, i really think the claim is true. it doesn't look too touched up.

+ its marketing ppl ... they don't have to be technical

Looking how the shot was taken, I pity those filter less 14-24mm lenses.
But hey , the N brand went to the moon and back

Thom Hogan had talked about this ads and their slogan some time back.

http://bythom.com/oldnews.htm

"Such claims, of course, stir the fan-boys into action. Some just don't get the point Nikon was trying to make (hint: it's not that you can't take nice motorcycle racing pictures with other cameras, and it's not that this is a superior image to any other motorcycle shot that's been taken). Some just don't like having their camera brand of choice called out. Some just want to argue.

First, I'd like to point out that this is the first time in a while that Nikon has actually pushed images with their new pro equipment advertising. The D2x was advertised without images for quite some time at a time when Canon was inserting large posters of Bo Derek taken with their latest EOS 1DsII. Personally, I'm happy to see Nikon back in the serious pro ad game, even though I don't think they nailed their point.

So what was the point?

ISO 6400, 9 fps, 1/5000, no flash, taken after sunset in low light, of very fast moving objects. Put another way: very trying conditions, very excellent results. "
