the main question is: are you willing to change lenses when the need arises. if you find it troublesome, you already know the answer.
other than that, the only significant advantage of having the 18-200 is you get vr throughout the range. i'm not sure about the quality as different people say different things about the lens.

Check out the review of the 18-200 VR which has been just posted in dpreview.
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/...p6_vr_afs_n15/ That might help you decide. Personally, i will keep the 18-70mm and get a 70-300 VR.

Maybe u should keep your D70 kit lens and buy a 55-200mm VR, the combo will have better IQ than 18-200mm alone. Of cos it is not so convenience. The bokeh from 55-200mm is much better than 18-200mm.

Sell the kit lens and get a Tamron 17-50 AF 2.8. This lens is sharp and the 2.8 aperture is very useful. Keep this lens even if you get a VR 18-200.

was in the same boat previously. Unless u need 2.8 for indoor sport or the shallow DOF, go with the 18-200 and dun look back. I tried a 18-70 + 70-300 combi... too troublesome to take out hte 70-300 so i wasted a few opportunities.

the 18-70 is a good lens for its price and especially when in comparison to the other kit lenses like the 18-55 and 18-135. i liked its build quality the most.
you should keep it if you dont intend to get another lens covering its focal range and just go ahead and get the 70-300. its pretty good as i think its VR II but cost wise, its a tad more expensive compared to the 55-200VR (if im not wrong, the 70-300 sells for $800 brand new). i have seen the 70-300 being sold for 650+ on the b/s sections here. check them out! the only reason why i sold off my 18-70 kit lens is because i got a tamron 17-55 |
