Haven't tried the Sigma so I don't know about 1. Sigma might be faster.
2. I'm pretty sure the Nikon would be more neutral in terms of colour.
3. 30/1.4 should be more suitable because the working distance is shorter. But YMMV, if you have enough distance, the 50/1.4 might be better.
4. Hard to say. The MTF of the Sigma isn't superb but I've seen sharp images shot with that lens. My guess is that over the DX area, the 50/1.4 might be better in terms of MTF.

Thanks all Nikonian...
I've got both lens.

1. Both are equally fast in my opnion.
2. Nikon is more neutral, Sigma produces are warmer image which is to the liking of some.
3. I'd say the Sigma for it is a 30mm as compared to a 50mm.
4. Both copies of mine produce rather sharp images but I've not done a comparison one-to-one.

I have both these lenses.
  1. Sigma is faster
  2. Nikon is more natural (the Sigma is warmer)
  3. The 50mm is more suitable as the 30mm can cause some unwanted distortions
  4. Both are equally sharp but you'll need to check the Sigma as some (very few) copies aren't tack sharp.

I use the 30mm more than the 50mm due to the following:

i. wider angle required for events.
ii. a lower shutter speed for a sharp photo for low light without flash (in comparison to 50mm).

Then again, it depends on what you are shooting.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

Perhaps he is referring to the QC for the 30mm/1.4 batch of lenses. Not all lenses are created equal

Maybe you could compare the excellent Nikon 35mm F2 with the Sigma 30mm F1.4 also in terms of more similar focal length.

Never used the sigma, but love my nikon F1.4, amazingly sharp!! A sample here taken at F2.0, at 7.00 in the evening, no flash, no PP.

Yep, it's a QC issue. Have heard a couple of users complaining about their copy being "soft".

Actually, a closer comparison would be the Nikon 28mm f/1.4. Some owners of both the Nikon 28mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 have said that the quality of the shots from these lenses are very, very similar, with the Sigma performing well in its center but being a tiny bit soft at the edges. The Nikon was a good overall performer (edge-to-edge) but this is probably due to their shooting with a DX camera, using only the center of the 28mm's optics.

Ha! Ha! They are all made in Japan

Really, they are!

Anyway, rather than look at the few samples we can give, take a look at the thousands of samples at PBase and make your comparisons there:

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Samples at PBase

Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D AF Samples at PBase

Nikkor 35mm f/2D AF Samples at PBase

I think the focal length is more important for me, the 50mm seems to be kinda far for things i usually shoot.
Prob the 30mm since its the only one that can autofocus on my D60.

Some samples of 2 lens from a photo hobbyist... I got them quite recently at the end of last year....

Some Nikon 35mm F2 samples...
http://bokehman.blogspot.com/search/...on%2035mm%20F2

Some Nikon 50mm F1.4 samples...
http://bokehman.blogspot.com/search/...%2050mm%20F1.4

For me, I use the lens according to how much I want the environment to be part of the scene, with respect to the subject. I have not tried the Sigma 50mm F1.4 but I believe it would make for some interesting pictures too.
