Just to share my experience with the self cleaning function.
There was a huge dust speck from my pics from Airshow and found out that it's the CCD that is dirty. Since it is a good chance to test the self cleaning, I tried the function. Well, it was not an execute and clear from the first time you hit the button but eventually it is gone after around 5 - 10 tries. Seems to be a good feature instead of travelling to Nikon service centre for a 1/2 hr wait |

Use a manual blower- like a Giotto Rocket- not compressed air. Compressed air can contain propellants which can stick to your sensor. In most cases that is all you need to do to get rid of dust.

Normally I will use the pressure can air blower, it do the job well, but you have to be careful and spray at an angle and tilt the camera upside down, so that when the blower fires the air the dust will drop down.
Just my 2 cents comment.
