Please advise.
I am using Windows Movies Player to transfer my DV Tape to my Computer (AVI format) Question is : 1. Whether its Windows Movie Player or Adode Premiere or others to transfer to AVI, the quality of the downloaded AVI will be the same right? I am using WinDVD creator 2 to convert from AVI to DVD format (mpeg)so that I can view on my normal DVD player on TV (CRT). But it appears to be pixelated when I view on TV even though i chose highest quality mpeg setting. Question is: 2. Are all AVI to MPEG converter the same? Are we expected to see pixelation on our own MPEG movies? Any workaround? Thank you |

When you transfer the tape to your PC, it is important to make sure that the type of AVI file is DV format, otherwise it will get further compressed and you lose quality. As a quick check, a one hour clip in DV format should be around 13GB, or a 10 minute clip should be around 2GB. If your files are much smaller, you need to change the capture settings.
If your MPEG converter starts with a good source it will give the best results, so make sure the AVI file is not compressed more than necessary (i.e. capture as DV format). |

Thanks for reply. I use Windows Movie maker to transfer to DV-AVI. That is ok? Does MPEG converter show pixelations on TV after conversion even from good quality DV-AVI format? Thanks |

Usually no, but if there is a lot of motion and fine detail in the video, or if the MPEG bitrate is too low, you will get pixelation. I'm not familiar with WinDVD Creator so don't know what it allows you to set for the encoding. 8 Mbps CBR would be a good starting point and you should not see any pixelation with that. |
