Well, since you're on the Nikon system... In all honesty, if you're looking for an upgrade, go to a D300.

    1) depends on how much you can sell the D40 and purchase the D80 for....

    and

    2) do you need the upgrade to the D80 (limitations of the d40, inability to use non af-s lens etc)

i upgraded from the d40 to the d80 due to points 1 & 2 and no regrets....

the d80 is a good enough camera. some will argue that its best to buy what you are able to afford now rather than buying many cameras in between. a camera body is expected to last you about 2 years.

imo, its worth spending on lens you can keep

    I don't see how it's an upgrade.
If you only have the kit lenses (the 55-200 isn't really anything good, imho), then you'd be more limited by your lenses than camera.
Though I must admit D40 is too much of a toy dSLR to begin with, I think you're unlikely to face any limitations of the equipment as of yet.
Stick with it, get better lenses.

    my point of view~

there are always limitations on how far we can go. for d40 to d80 , what do you consider as upgrade ?

for me , what Daneal79 said is the most relevant question .

    im gonna be upgrading, from a d50 to maybe d80. i;'ve tried d200, but i think i;ll stick to getting a d80 or s5/s3pro

So selling ur D40 and the 2 lenses mean u have nothing to shoot with.
When you bought the D80 kits you have something to shoot with, but you lost the 55-200 range. However, you gain more features and AF on non AFS lens with D80.

If your D40 can fetch a good price, sell it.
55-200 sell it, unless you need it.

D300 is good, but I don't think is affordable to you yet and you don't need it.
Buy good lenses for your D80 as you save up. Shoot more and increase your skill level.
When you have acquired a good set of lenses and up your skill level, then you can
consider to get a better body when money allow you to.

D40 to D80 is an upgrade but whether it's worth it or not is another question. I don't know the price of the 55-200 but I am able to get a new D40 kit (with 18-55) for slightly less than $800.

I think this is more a personal what-kind-of-photography-i-shoot question - even if you give me a D80, I will still want to use my D40. Simply because of the size, features, and that the kit lens is already near-perfect for me - basically I know my shooting style, and that is all I need.

When you buy and use electronics, there will always be depreciation. If you are not prepared to take the loss, then stick with the D40 and enjoy it, be content with it.

There is a reason why there is a D40, D80, D300 and D3 in the Nikon line-up. Each is a different price point which serves a different market segment in terms of camera robustness, camera functionality and camera performance.

If you are curious as to whether the D80 is a viable and "economically justifiable" upgrade, spend some money to rent a D80 (or borrow one from a friend) and shoot to get a feel and compare the differences in performance and image quality. If u don't like the D80, then keep shooting with the D40. If u like the D80, then justify to yourself why you want to upgrade and find the cash to fund it. Hope this helps

d40 and d80 is like comparing a manual toyota and an automatic toyota. whether it's considered an upgrade is entirely up to the person who's gonna be behind the wheel

some people will be very satisfied with a manual, some people won't. in my own opinion (i used to have a d40 and now d80) and experience though my venture into this hobby has only been slightly less than a year, it is better to get a d80 as it allows me to have more options (just like driving a manual car!)

of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. you just have to figure out what YOU want so good luck!

D40 and D80 are both very good camera will create very good images...its your preference.
Question is, do you need those extra features from D80?

To me, the D80 is a definate upgrade from a D40... if not for all the other stuff... the main draw is that it would be able to focus using AF or AF-D lenses. Also, there are more buttons on the D80 that you can adjust various settings without having to use the menu driven D40. So... my take is... go for it! After you get the D80, get some good AF or AF-D lenses... they are much cheaper than AF-S ones, and you'll feel that you've made the right move

I started out with a D40x, and then jumped to a D200 (was debating long and hard between D80 and D200, so decided to take the big jump) and have not looked back. It's not just about extra features, but is also about the design and layout on the body. So for me... I definately needed the extra features... and the features helps when I have 5 seconds to make the necessary changes before taking the next shot...

sorry if you didnt get my point ...

the d40 to d80 is defintely an upgrade. even the new d60 to d80 is an upgrae.

the d40,d40x and if im not wrong the d60, lacks the ability to AF or autofocus with slightly older lenses. this is a disadvantage to some people maybe like me, since i'e older lenses, and usually, and i'll say, there are many good lenses out there which will not AF on these 3 bodies, which i find quite a sad thing.. not all 3rd party lenses are compatible to AF on these 3 bodies, but with d80, yes you can!

definitely an upgrade la.. on paper d80 got more features mar. equal level would be more like d40 versus d40x and d60

if not who want to buy d80 over d40 - the main question you have to ask yourself is WHY you want to upgrade, firstly

and WHAT you need to upgrade, factoring in all the costs and all that. what features you need, what features you don't.

if you want a car that just needs to take you to work, then any car will do right, so long as it drives smoothly. but if you need a car that can say, accelerate damn fast because you happen to be james bond (sowwy, cannot think of anything less lame) then you would need something higher end. same goes for cameras, you will pay for what you get.. the only differentiation is how much you get - and then that would depend on brand already. budden you already got some lenses so might as well stick to nikon.

upgrading is not necessarily a good thing. there are people who are comfortable with prosumer.. buy dslr already downgrade back to prosumer. just like somepeople like big big house, some people like small small house. knowing what you want is more important than just upgrading because it should be better
