Default which flash for first?

Hi all. I've search the flash topics but couldn't find the answers.
Should I get a Speedlite for my first external flash?
is it really good? or is there any other type (third party) flash for my Canon EOS 350D?
FYI I'm a tight-budget newbie. so I little bit afraid to buy expensive accesories
thx before for respond

For a tight budget i wud say e 430EX shd b more than sufficient. Anything below tat, i wud say cost to performance wise not really worth it. But of course it all depends on ur budget.

580 is top of e line for speedlite. Unless u use it for work then stay away fm it.

OK got it. 580EX II absolutely the best. but the price is very high
430EX could be better for a newbie like me. Thx Fragnatic, chalib & AdyH..

580EX II is definitely worth the investment. its my first flash (thou i've been using the old old full auto 420EX while in sch photog).
430EX is definitely better than the 420EX, with more manual control and custom functions.

the 580 can be used as a master to trigger other flashes like the 430, or 580.

if on budget, u can check out the prices in BnS section for new/grey/2nd hand sets. they are cheaper of cos.

oh, 4got to mention, i dont really like the 420/430EX, they can only rotate 90 deg to the right and 180 deg to the left. unline the 580, 180 deg on either side.
