Default Budget 2008: Tax Structures for Diesel Vehicles

    FINALLY!!!

    ***Extracted from http://www.singaporebudget.gov.sg/sp...4/p4.html#s4.2***

4.84 We will also introduce changes to the tax levied on private diesel cars. The current special tax on private diesel cars is too punitive, and explains why we only have one such car on the road today. The changes will narrow the difference in the cost of fuel consumption that a motorist faces, between a Euro-IV car and a petrol car.

This is a nice move but not greatly significant.

Diesel engine, work best in bigger cc capacity. Since the new scheme is based on cc it is almost the same as before.

For a 1600 cc diesel, you pay 2000 instead of 2900 last time.

The petrol one is at 749.

You need to do a lot of KM before you manage to catch the diference back. As a private car, most ppl will not drive that many km specially thinking that use of the car is now more expensive due to rising ERP and rising cost fuel.

A 1600 cc will be for a medium income that will feel the pinch of all this.

I wonder if it will really be an incentive for the ppl?

A simple wine (grape juice) will at least cost 80 SGD.
The numbers don't seem to be drastically different than before. Keep in mind that one litre of wine contains much less than one litre of alcohol. I.e., the tax on a 0.7 litre bottle of red wine (12%vol alcohol, S$70 tax per litre) will be S$5.88.
