Why Full Frame is Good?

Hi,

I've been reading and seems a lot of people are waiting for A900 FF sensor.
I know FF should be good, able to provide wider anger since no cropping.
But what exactly is the advantage?

From what I know, it would have less noise, more mp, more detail

Perhaps other pros can correct me if I am wrong

It's good for people with legacy lenses basically... most of us don't really need the resolution... I have 5 lenses which are all 35mm format... or full frame in DSLR speak... and I prefer wide angles... so the wider lenses I have are kind of wasted cos of the crop factor in the current SONY cameras... for me that's why I am waiting for full frame... other reasons are non-sensor related... like faster AF, better build quality, etc..

Full frame is good unless you need it and can afford it.
It is also good for people who like to shoot wide. But lens like Sigma 10-20 is quite wide on a crop sensor DSLR.
The view through the viewfinder should be better and brighter.
So far the most affordable FF DSLR on the market is the Canon 5D.
Looking at the price of Nikon D3, just wondering what price will the FF Sony DSLR cost??
Full frame is good to me unless it is affordable.

I used same lens on canon 5D and 30D, I found 5D's bokeh and noise control much better than 30D even by same lens (like 24/1.4L)

its not only for wide angle...

the DOF of 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, etc, those portrait lenses you will use wide open, used in FF & APS-C will be different.

Just imagine you are only taking the centre of the picture... now imagine taking the whole pic, how creamy the sides going to be... tats the usage of FF... (for me that is) wide angle is only a bonus... oh ya... also good for my 16mm fisheye...

Noise control should be much better. Even at ISO 1600 my FF 5D produces very usable photos (even at 100% I find the noise to be acceptable - depending on personal preference). I shoot wide more than tele so FF is really suited to my style e.g. landscapes, architecture. The details help in my protraits.

I may get a backup crop body for tele needs e.g. outdoor sports / wildlife (not really) / birding (no money for the big mama lenses) due to the crop and final pixel density (advantage goes to crop bodies here).

At the end of the day, it depends on what you shoot.

If you compare a photo taken with FF at 16mm and a cropped frame at 10mm (say 1.6x crop) you will notice a slight different in composition. FF photos are able to produce what 1.6x crop can do but not the other way, so to say, it's "more raw" than the cropped one.

The other thing that is not mentioned in Ken Rockwell's article is that for FF sensors, you can get the same level of depth-of-field as you'd would for film. E.g. a 50mm lens on a cropped sensor would give the rough viewing angle of a 80mm lens on a FF sensor/film, but the DOF effect is different.

Then again, mebbe this only matters for old birds like me who've started with film ... . ; )

Why full frame is good? then you should ask people who are still shoot medium format or large format.

They are different... good or bad it is just relative.

I have taken hundreds of shots with Sony A-700 ISO 3200 and 6400 and I never seems to have any complaint with it the "useablity" of the shots... Actually, I really like ISO3200 images as it is soft and give the feel to the image as well as not being too digital (ISO 3200 RAW converted to jpeg BTW).

Seriously saying, while I am looking for a digital system to purchase, it occur to me that whether is it full frame or 4/3 or cropped APS-C sensor, it does not matter if one cannot afford the system.

It will be at least another 3-4 years wait before an affordable full frame (35mm terms) camera will be out.

Affordable is relative... my student can afford to by a Canon 1D MkIII plus a few L lenses... or maybe I should say his father... hahaha...

And I believe I have to wait for years before I'm willing to spend the money for FF. I don't have a rich father... haha!

no crop factor when using your lens... ex.. a 24mm lens will utilize the entire lens circle at 24mm while in APS it is crop to 35mm...
cleaner ISO noise... imagine using ISO 6400 or twice than that then still usable.

unfortunately for these features, it cost a lot
