Hi folks,
I'm quite new to digital photography. While I got my 400D over a year ago, I've not done very much and am still using my basic kit lens. I'm now going to go for a holiday to Cambodia and was hoping to pick up a wide-angle lens for my trip. Can someone offer me some recommendations (as well as guestimates on price)? I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Please don't be too technical - I'm really quite new to all this ![]() TIA, T'spaz |

Bro, there is only one choice for you if budget permits.
Get the EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM lens. Estimated price is around $1,000-$1,100 depending on shops. If budget constraint, go for 3rd party wide angle lenses such as Sigma 10-20mm, Tamron 11-18mm. Enjoy your trips. ![]() |

Try looking for a second hand EF-S 10-22mm at Buy/Sell for around $800. If not, you could consider renting the lens for your trip.

I have a 17-40mm f/4L and it's my first lens (with the 50mm f/1.8 II). It's good, but isn't exactly super wide angle on 400D. The 10-22 will be better.

Actually i would recommend Sigma 10-20mm.
It costs $735 at OP (according to pricelist), and comes with intl. warranty, for 1st hand set. for me, i feel both the image quality and build quality are excellent, and has served me well. Suggest going to the shop to try out all lens before making a purchase. Good luck! |

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm keeping my options open. I don't mind spending the money on the lens but need to evaluate whether it will fit my needs. Perhaps renting is a good idea... (should've thought of that).
Thanks also for the kind words viz my holiday ![]() |

another alternative, try the Tokina 12-24 F4. Not bad too. Think it's the most affordable among all the lens.

Choice is very subjective. 10-22 is only usable on EF-S capable DSLRs. Some pple like even wider so bought a 14mm f/2.8L. Even others such as 17-40 f/4L and 16-35 f/2.8L are also abt the same perspective on a FF DSLR as a 10-22 on cropped sensors. So choice of how wide and type of wide-angle lens also depends on what DSLR u're using.

Among the third-party options, yes it is the cheapest, and the most well-built. I'd be lying if I said it was lousy - it is truly value for money.

Hi Folks,
I'm in Australia at the moment and stumbled across a deal for the Tamron AF 11-18mm Wide Zoom DiII LD (Canon Mount) for AUD$600 (brand new with warranty etc). In addition, I can also recover my 10% GST on the lens, which brings the price down to about AUD$545 (approx S$700). Should I get it? It's the last piece available in the store and I'm quite keen. Suggestions, feedback etc appreciated as always. The sooner the better cause it's not going to be around for long. http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/11_18mm.asp Thanks in advance T'spaz (This post is a repeat of the one in the Newbies forum. I wanted to try here for advice since replies are a little slow in the other section.) |
