Default Sony 75-300mm vs Minolta 70-210mm

Hi all,

New to photography here.
I'm interested in shooting animal subjects (in zoo, bird park, wild, etc...) and outdoor events. I would like to capture the expression on faces and was thinking that a telephoto zoom lens in roughly my specified range would be able to aid me in this pursuit.

With my budget available, I am currently contemplating between a 1st hand Sony 75-300mm vs a 2nd hand Minolta 70-210mm (this is the "beercan" right?)

The last i checked, the Sony is about $399, and the Minolta ranges from $200-$400 on the 2nd market.

I like the Sony for its extensive zoom range, but I have heard really good reviews about the image quality and bokeh effect of the beercan lens. However, I'm not too sure if 210mm is enough for my intended usage. But the beercan also got the F4 throughout the entire zoom range which is really attractive.

Anyone care to offer some comments/advice on my situation?
Or do you have a recommendation for a 3rd party lens too?

Thank you all so much,
WeiSheng

Actually, both lenses are fantastic... though a good copy of the 75-300 is capable of producing amazing and sharp photos - you can check out raincool's photos...

Indeed, this is one of the lenses that I didn't test out before deciding to buy one (besides the white monster, which also didn't need much introduction) - it's one of them legendary Minolta lenses...

it all depends on your budget, your type of usage and your desired results. If still not sure, buy both lenses.

a second hand copy of 75-300mm can get around $175, first hand copy is $300-400. I am not sure about beercan prices. However, i seldom use telephoto lens, maybe only during fashion show, stage events and the coming airshow. Most of the time will be using 16-80 or 28-75.

Depends on the money you have with you, and what you are going for, best is to get your hands on them... these lenses are excellent lenses.
