i went through this process before. i initially bought a 350D and then sold it to buy a 30D two months later.

main differences:
magnesium body
f2.8 centre cross sensor
5fps
ISO in 1/3 steps
brighter viewfinder
bigger
top LCD screen
scroll wheel
bigger LCD

The main difference for me was the SPOT METER

For newbie I recommend the 350D. A good cam to start with as it has a lot of limitation. Once you notice it then you will appreciate the function of 30D. If you jump start 30D straight away you will not see the limitation and tend to make mistakes.

The most important differences for 350D/30D:
5fps
ISO3200

For 350D ISO800 will notice some noise, for 20D/30D you will experience the same only at ISO3200, good for night photographic.

30D has 5fps and spot metering and a large optical view finder which is important for composition. Of course, better body grip with magnesium alloy reinforcement...

I was a newbie about 6 months ago, I got a good secondhand 350 D in clubsnap marketplace forum.
Explore with a secondhand set first, and maybe once we get a hang in photography we could upgrade to 30D.

Then the 350D could be your spare.

or u can sell it to fund for the upgrade.

anw, i suggest to play ard with the 350D 1st since u are new. 30D has more features which u may need/know how to use.
