Was wondering if anyone hands on the new Sony 70-300G yet. Interested in that one as my minolta 70-300 kit lens sucks, especially with my DSLR which push the long end to 450mm. The Purple fringing is very bad. Got the very irritating purple edge when I am using the 300mm end. If I blow it up to 100% crop, most of the shots are practically useless. So was wondering if it is worth to invest into the new Sony 70-300mm G.

Is yours a minolta 70-300 kit lens or the Sony 70-300 kit lens ?
Generally, lenses built for film seems to be soft in image quality on a DSLR. Got myself a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 on my Sony A700. All shots can be used even on the edge or cropped 100%. Give it a try for less than S$ 300/- lens. |

Or just get the 70-200 from abroad... Or the 80-200 APO G that's on the Marketplace section.

i'm not sure but i think IQ wise that would be the same as the big beercan. Same length and focal range but without SSM and G mark
That SSM+G cost a lot ![]() |

No. The quality of the optics is much much better. Edge-to-edge sharpness, contrast and overall resolution/sharpness of the lens are noticeably better in a G.

Ok, I got some prices off the dpreview forums:
Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 - US$699 (street price) - S$1013 Sigma 70-200 f.2,8 HSM - US$999 (street price) - S$1448 SONY 70-300 G - US$799 (street price) - $1158 I think the Tamron and the SONY are quite affordable... I expect prices to slide a little by the time the flagship is out in Photokina... |

Definitely 3 good affordABLE lens choices to the Sony 70-200 f2.8. I will definitely wait for reviews on each lens IQ first.
Interestingly, with the Sony 70-300mm G with SSM, coupled with the newer bodies should give the Tamron and Sigma serious competition. I hope all 3 will be retailing soon. |
