Wink help with time exposures

Hi! I'm very much a newbie and I'm trying to figure out how to use time exposures with my camera. I have a Sony a100 and for some reason, this concept confuses the heck out of me. I don't understand when I set my exposure time longer and hold down the button, why my camera is overriding me and still taking a quick "point and shoot" picture. I am in manual mode. Any help? Please?

you gotta set ur shutter speed to B (bulb), so the shutter will remain open for as long as you depress the shutter release button
