if shop close down the day after you buy, the shop warranty is no longer valid - i think even if the shop reopens later under a different name

I have bought a grey set Canon lens and Canon flash from The Camera Workshop. This means no Canon warranty card but it has shop warranty. Now 2.5 years later both item are still okay and TCW is still in business. Never used their shop warranty.
Do you feel comfortable paying the $200 premium or do you want to take a chance and save some money to pay for filters etc? Anyway Canon warranty is only 12 months. If it gets spoiled on the 13 month you still pay money to get it repaired. Same thing with grey sets. Canon will repair your grey set as long you are willing to pay the repair cost. Final decision is up to you, no one here can make your choice but only tell you the pros and cons. Personally, if the difference is only $50, I'll go for Canon warranty. |

As a thumb of rule, it recommended to get your stuff from the popular shop. This apply to grey set too. I got my Pentax camera and other accessories from OP. Well, they are functioning well till today. Not giving me any problem since I got it on april 07.
I guess the 2 recommended shop for getting grey set are quite obvious in CS. ![]() Of coz, some might think that paying 200 more can have a peaceful mind, since there are 1 yr warranty. Somemore canon can also buy the extended warranty by paying extra for it. So at the end of the day, it up to your pocket to justify ![]()

Please read the T&Cs carefully. Most warranty only cover manufacturer's defects and NOT wear & tear items which tends to be subjective (eg. shutter, buttons, LCD, CMOS, batteries, etc.)
ALso, most shop warranty is on a "best effort" basis, that is, if they cannot repair, they will replace with a similar model, or simply refund you the extra "insurance" dollars and cancel the agreement.
