Looking at the links, I suppose to make the best out of this trip, you need at least a 500-600mm lens?

You can never have a lens that's long enough so to shoot birds, so its preferable to have a 500 - 600 mm, or if you are lucky enough, the latest 800 mm lens (Canon). But seriously as we are hoping to shoot larger birds, a 80 - 400 mm lens should suffice.

Come join us and we'll have great fun!

I use Nikon 80-400mmVR
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cslingphoto

400mm is good for small birds and flight shots too as you can hand held and shoot.
