Default Shadow on pictures with 17-35mm f/2.8

Hi

I have tried taking some pictures indoor (night time) with 17-35mm f/2.8 on D80 with the built-in flash. The results taken is that there is a shadow on the pictures due to the size of the lens (I suppose, please correct me if I am wrong).

How do I overcome this shadow issue? I suppose I need to buy a flashlight (SB-600 or SB-800). Currently I do not have a flashlight.

Of course if I take during the day, the shadow issue will not appear.

Can someone confirm my doubts? Thanks in advance.

Regards

Yes. It happens. Your lens is sticking out. If youhad your lens hood on, it'll be even more pronounced. You'll need an external flash unit or crank up your ISO.

Your lens is too big and is in the way of the built-in flash coverage.

As stated in the D80 manual, there's a min range to adhere to depending on the lens in use as well as the focal length of the particular lens in use.
