First of all, what kind of macros are you after?

Still life, insects or others?

For still life, a 60mm with a decent flash, like a SB-600 or SB-800 (if you have the cash) is sufficient. A tripod is good to have but you may need to aquire a focusing rail in addition to it to allow you to move the whole camera rig back and forth to get full magnification and get the subject in view.

For insects and butterflies, you'd need a minimum of 90mm onwards to capture the insects without spooking them too much. Having flashes like the R1C1 helps, but it's not totally necessary, I use my Tamron 90mm macro with a SB-800 and I can capture some decent macros already. Check out my flickr site for my shots using such a combo.

Having extension tubes increase the maginification ratio loads, but at the loss of easy focusing. You may need to move back and forth to capture your shot more than the other rigs.

I don't need anything else to shoot macro like this one below. Just D40 and 18-55 kit lens, handheld reversed.
