i seriously dont know.
i was shooting my niece first month. when i changed my lens to 85 f1.4, i noticed there are crop windows through my VF. I went into the menu then i realised the crop was changed to 5:4. i had to manually change it back to FX mode. any ideas? i dont think it's because i accidentally pressed the functions buttons at the back of the camera, since it takes quite a few presses to get to that menu. ![]() ![]() |

Did you accidentally left the camera "on" while changing lenses? That could be the cause.

i dont think you need to off you're camera before you change your lenses. these camera's are designed for professionals, even meant to be brought to war! i think its a software issue because like you, ive never encountered such a problem, not even with my d200.

at least by the manuals of both F series and D series, it says "Be sure the camera is off when detaching or exchanging lenses", but whether to follow the manual or not, thats a personal preference

D200 does not have auto crop mode. Why not try again w/o turning off your cam when you change lens again and see if probem persist?

Looks like it's a one-off incident (or accident), since you deliberately re-acted the lens change, but all was well.
For the D3, is there a short-cut to quick change the format (DX, FX, etc) mode, like pressing the QUAL button, and turning a dial? |

It doesn't matter if its a professional equipment, it's wiser to switch off then change the lens. Its a bad practice to leave the camera Power on while changing the lens, battery etc. There are all connected throught electronic conductive parts. Technically to speak, any Electrical or electronic engineer will always advise you to shutdown any equipment with electrical or electronic parts before changing its peripheral.

While one may argue that start up times for cameras are a matter of milliseconds, when you factor in those two actions of switching on and off, believe me it takes more than a couple of milliseconds. |

I'm not paid to do church events, so I don't have cash available to rent a second body.

Then stick to a lens which does the job and dun bother changing lor.... IF you think you need to change, then the risk is always there, off or not...
