I intend to buy a D40X to give my interest in photography a kick start. But I have been google-ing around and found various rumors about the D40X having stopped production and a possible new model will be replacing it soon. Does anyone hear anything like this or have reliable news on this? While I know it is no use waiting forever for new models, I also don't want to buy a camera and than 1 or 2 months later realize it has obsolete. Also, heard that there might be new VR 18-55mm kit lens, wonder if this is true or if the VR is useful at all.

To be honest, I think you just buy what you can afford now, no point waiting, the new model will come out all most every year,

The D40x started life early too, launched about 4 mths after the D40!
I will not be surprised if Nikon comes up with a replacement.

I don't understand the logic behind D40x being replace. D40x is hardly 1 year old... What will the improvement be? 11 points auto focusing? 12 megapixels? 3" LCD screen? Then, nobody will buy D80 anymore... How about D80's replacment??

Even if it will be announced in 3 weeks time, it doesn't mean that you can get it there and then.
TS, there's more to photography then playing the waiting game. A newer model will not render a D40X useless. On the other hand, if a person can't take photo for S H I T, D60 or D3...... doesn't matter to him. |

It's difficult to say that Nikon will not put up a new entry level DSLR.
Personally for me, before buying the D200 on the first quarter of last year, I've heard rumour of a new DSLR but there were nothing concrete. True enough, the D300 came in December 2007. I would not have bought the D200 if I knew that the D300 will be available on December 2007.

There goes the market for pre-owned D40/40X
![]() keltong, if you can wait 3 weeks and have no desparate need to shoot now, why not? However, any new model announced may not be available in SG till about 4 weeks (or more) later. Also, prices for new models tend to take a while to drop. The 18-55 VR is out (about $350, depending on where you ask) and can be bundled with the D40X in kit form for about $1075-1080 (i.e., about $100 more than the standard non-VR kit). No reviews on this yet (but there is a thread where another CSer has posted his thoughts). Whether you need VR depends on what you shoot. I tend to shoot church/dim interiors when travelling but do not like carrying a tripod so it helps. |

D40xx with d300 sensor + 3.5fps, 0.5 increase just like d40 to d40x.

I was also thinking that the VR lens may help me newbie a little if I don't carry tripod. |
