For sunset pic, you can try to meter (spot/center weighted metering) around the sun area (never at the sun directly please) for a start and do exposure compensation accordingly.

1. spot meter on the highlight area near the sun to decrease exposure.
2. minus EV to decrease exposure. 3. manual mode with smaller aperture or shorter duration to decrease exposure. 4. gradient ND filter to decrease exposure on horizon and above. (metering need to be through the clear area or with mixed results through multi-pattern metering) |

doubt so, but not sure. try to see if your compact has control over aperture, shutter and EV first.
