Exclamation Just got a DSLR, so what's next?

Hi people, I recently just got a 400D kit and haven't gotten anything else for it... Can you pros please give me some pointers? Like what are the essential stuff I should get to protect my camera?

    Thanks!

    shoot more..

if you really need to protect it, get a camera bag.

or if you want, there's always camera armour.

shoot first. you'll realise what you need when you have shot enough with the kit..

And also, is there like any specific steps to protect the camera? Is there any thread in here that is of camera care?

just treat it like how you would treat a camera, don't drop it, hit it around, etc.

how well you protect the camera really depends on how much you want it protected. no steps to protecting it. you can always use gaffer tape if you don't want scratches or little bumps.

anyway, there are threads all around. even better, you can just search under google.

huh??? i think i need to get some essential maintaining kit right? like screen protector, dry cabinet, dust blower(?) etc??

i moved from sony-h1 to this canon 400d.. and my h1 wasn't properly taken care of and is in an atrocious state.. i don't want my 400d to become like it!

well, you should have said about maintenance and not about protecting it. cos i thought you meant to protect it from bumps and scratches.

anyway, its good to have a dry box, though not essential if you shoot almost everyday.

you can get a standard cleaning set from cathay or other photo shops.

lens tissues and lens liquid are to clean the lenses. lenspen preferred.

screen protector? for canon? maybe you can get third party ones, or if you dont mind those stick on types.

keep in the dry box when not in use.

i dont think there's anything else..

start shooting first and find out what's the thing you are missing....

    you might want to consider:

    dry box to prevent fungus
flash- will do drastic changes to your pics
    tripod- for your night shots

then you can start getting more lenses from here... and spend more money

    1. Dry cabinet, V important for long term and a waterproof cam bag like lowepro
    2. Blower/Cleaning Kit to clean the lens
    3. LCD protector, tapes for ur cam, cam raincoat -all optional-

But most importantly go out and shoot a lot.

After u purchased the above mentioned stuff... shoot! Keep shooting cause you paid alot for your DSLR, dont let it go to waste. From there you will be able to realise what exactly you like to shoot and focus on that area.

Dry cabinet for your DSLR body and lens.
UV/Skylight filter for your kit lens (just to protect the front glass element of your lens. not really necessary.)
LCD screen protector (again, not really necessary)

If you are careless/clumsy, no amount of camera accesories can save your camera from abuse over long usage. The moral of the story is treat your camera properly and use it carefully. Since you're using a 400D and not a 1D Mk III, the following two rules:

    1. Don't drop the camera.
    2. Read rule no 1.
    I shoot film.
