Default Do you take your vertical shots with underhand or overhand?

Without a vertical grip, do you place your hand on the top or bottom of the camera body?

sorry, i do not know the technical terminology for the holding techniques and call them overhand or underhand, which may not be correct. do teach me if you know the right jargon.

what i mean by overhand, is like what is depicted in my shadow as below.

some has said that it is better to hold it underhand, as it gives more stability, but i find it awkward and unnatural to tug in my arm, so i do it the overhand method.

interesting thread. i have seen more girls using the tuck in arm method. seems to be subconscious thing. the girls i know shoot tat way. only problem is that the pictures end up in the wrong orientation and u got rotate it back.

    Hi zoosh,

That's a good question!! I'd be interested to know the consensus as well.
Instinctively I shoot overhand, but I saw a someone shoot underhand once and after trying it I felt it did give more stability, at the expense of a bit more discomfort and awkwardness.

especially if they didnt shave and wear sleeveless.

i find the biggest bother with that grip is adjusting the focal length cos my hands are big. if i put them close together, it is hard to adjust.

I have always shot using overhand grip after selling my battery grip. I first tried the underhand grip after I chanced upon an article debating on the usefulness of the battery grip and the TS mentioned he using the underhand grip all the time. I gave it a try and found it to be more comfortable and natural than overhand grip.

never try over hand before, using under hand as it comes naturally when I take vertical shots, but after reading this I will try overhand to day,

    Haha, nice one~

Back to the topic, even when i am using a grip, i still shoot "overhand" if i want to make a quick shot. Also partly because i use hand strap instead of neck strap.

I find the underhand method awkward. From the day I first used an SLR, I have been using the overhand method and I actually prefer it over the battery grip when taking vertical shots.

my use of overhand or underhand depends on which feels more stable at the time, and on the position of the flash - makes a difference especially with bounce flash.

IIRC..i've read somewhere..either the web or user manual..the proper way of holding should be overhand..but who cares as long u r comfortable and can hold steadily..and certain situations u need different holding methods for instance bouncing ur flash off a reflector and the reflector is on ur right..

i choose depending on the mood, but i agree that underhand gives more stability.

however, i think we naturally use the overhand because we see people do it, and it does gives more freedom. one more point is that, when you have it on a tripod, you want the shutter to be accessible, and you tend to let it go vertical with the shutter on top- hence an 'overhand' orientation of the camera.

Same... tried both. Overhand seems more natural.

My S3 Pro has a built in vertical grip but without the command dials. So when I need to adjust the exposure when shooting portrait orientation, I naturally shoot overhand instead. However, when using my FZ20 prosumer, I prefer to shoot underhand most of the time. Used to it since that was how I used to always shoot when using my prosumer last time.

i sandwich the camera in my palms with my right hand supporting the base of the camera and the left hand both for shutter release and lens support.
