It is not a popular lens. It is a bit expensive, only slightly cheaper than Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 (LB3). That's why it is not popular. Not sure when comparing to Canon lens.

It is also rather close to the price of the Canon f/4L IS and f/2.8 (non-IS).

It used to be very popular, until Sigma raised its price (which IMHO was just plain stupid).

Yes, I think the price range is very close to nikon. Not sure the quality is good or not.
I am interested to know what price are you thinking of get if it is a second hand one, I may be able to tell you if the price is right. Because I am looking for one too recently.

I check with OP and the price diff from the sigma and nikon 2 touch is only $50!

Main complains is that sigma F2.8 is soft compared to Nikon F2.8 which is ...er razor.

I own this lens. The picture quality difference is not very obvious compared to Nikon 80-200. Sigma is $20 less as of Sept'07.
Comparing to my ex Nikon 70-300G this Sigma lens is very very very outstanding.
The picture is a slightly towads red (might be better for potrait) than Nikon 80-200. I chose Sigma primarily because of "Macro" too. No doubt Nikon Quality is unquestionable. If can i will like to upgrade to VR70-200 in near future.

watch out for the famous lens barrel coating peeling problem within a year.

mine is the 1st version. regrated buying it. should have bought 70-200mm f4 instead.

Mine is the first version HSM, i think i brought for almost 8 years, the condition still very good, photo is sharp with good bokeh.
Maybe because due to the under usage.
But frankly speaking, if now, i will choose to buy nikon.

Is there much difference between the first generation 70-200mm and the macro other than the min focus distance macro mode?

Yeah, 3rd party lens has got to be priced significantly lower than cam-brand lens. For Nikon user, the HSM is a huge plus point against the 80-200 2touch.

I had the 80-200 2touch, but sold away liao. Got 2 problems -
1 Slow AF as compared with those lens with HSM, USM.
2 The AF/MF ring broke - seems like this is a common problem.

Otherwise, this is a great solid lens in terms of built quality and optical performance.

But, if I were to get one now, I would still choose the Sigma for the HSM, so that I will not miss a shot due to slow AF.

you mentioned that your 80-200 2-touch AF/MF ring broke... care to elaborate more? i have this lens too and i've got problems with the ring too. when turning to either AF or MF, the rign can't click in place.

any idea how much is it to get it fix? also, if i shake my lens, i can hear sounds coming from the inside... sigh, how much will it cost to get it fixed?
