After 105,097 actuation, the shutter finally decided to "up the lorry".

Here's to another 100k+ in 2008 and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!! to all...

So it failed by jamming? Sudden failure or did it act funny a few days earlier?
100k a typical shutter life?

it failed when part of the curtain tripped. managed to push it back but the pictures after that had a streak across the center from where the shutter. prior to that the shutter did feel a little sluggish.

is 100k a typical shutter life? to tell u the truth i dunno really know but i do know that my camera takes a beating during some of my shoots so i guess 100k is acceptable for me.

1DMk2/Mk2N shutter life rated at 200,000 cycles. 1DM3 is 300,000 IIRC.

BTW how much did the replacement shutter cost you? (ie, total cost).

Still cheaper than getting a new camera no matter what.

100K sounds really low if the shutter was not previously used/abused or if dirt or gunk didn't work it's way in.

Mine failed at 50K only.

Thanks again for the heads up on the part and the replacement cost.

At least those who need to get the shutter replaced, can get some idea.

There was unfortunately a batch of 1 series that had problematic shutters.

Things these days change (QC slip ups/batch manufacture probles) - anything and everything unexpected happens - or rather simply - anything can happen.

Ahh ... that would explain some of the things that happen. An 'expert' once 'whispered' to me that the 1D Mk II shutters were the worst there is with a very high failure rate. He could have generalised based on friends' experiences affected by this batch problem.

my 1dmk2 really went through some "extreme" shooting conditions over the past 6 months. for me, given those conditions 100K+ is acceptable IMO.

the 1-series are extremely reliable and rugged. i still have faith in it to see me through my shoots and help me deliver the results.

the specs are just a guide and not a hard and fast rule. for what i shoot i'd say it's a realistic expectation for my shutter to fail.

Japanese companies usually use the 6-sigma rule to ensure specs are within reasonable tolerable levels, 100K against 200K is enough to sent production floor into a frantic chaos. And for a Pro level machine, test are usually done at adverse conditions, like high and low temp, high and low humidity, vibration tests, impact test, etc. Plus specs are usually already on the safer side, I believe a well assembled 1DMk2 will surpass the 200K mark, under all working condition, ruling out foul play of cos.

if 75% of that 100,000 were shot at 8fps... I wouldn't have been very surprised if it died so early.

They might have rated it at 200,000 based on more.. uh "normal" usage.

200k/300k is NOT the SPEC, it is the MTBF design life, sort of the expected life.
I would be quite happy to see my shutter last 100k.

So at 100k that shutter's an underachiever?
(It's below average)

Sometimes I wish manufacturers would just quote something like B10 life (life-cycle rating at which a cumulative 10% of population would have failed).
