Question Settings for Night Shooting for Canon S3IS

Hi. i am new to this forum as i would like to find out how to tune the settings for my canon S3IS. Whenever i take pictures at night, i would get pictures with the background being much more darker while the faces of the people in the picture are relatively clear. Please advise. Thank you. Happy new year!

Set your flash to Slow Synco mode. Also, set it to second curtain. Set the camera up on a tripod, use the two second self timer. Tell the people in the photo not to move until the flash goes off.
