Default Quote from a documentary photograher

"The mixture of desert dust and thick, oily smoke gives new meaning to needing dust and splash-proof cameras". From Morten Hvaal in the latest issue of 'Digital Camera'

You guys guess the cam he's using.

He was using an Olympus E-1. Now of course either still E-1 or move to E-3 already lah.

"gives new meaning to needing dust and splash-proof cameras"

What does it remind you of? Olympus E-1/E-3! Because not many other brands dare to claim this.

Oh..I din know that Oly is the only maker of dust and splash proof? Isn't the high end Nikon and Canon also waterproof and dustproof too??

But they don't shout it out loud like Olympus.

Even the mid-end ones (D200,D300, 40D) are also weather sealed, although the mention of that feature seems to be rather low-key in adverts.

Canon 40D is not fully weather sealed. Somebody shot in a drizzle and the camera went bonkers shortly after. The camera started shooting by itself and LCD fogged up.

True weather-resistance is only on their pricey 1D series with equally pricey L lenses.

Looks like it's there but it doesn't work as well, pretty much like their sensor dust reduction...

The 40D isn't weather sealed at all.

In fact, only the 1D-series is proofed against the elements.

I guess it's just partial sealing then. I wonder why even bother, if it's partial? A marketing feature, rather than a functional feature?

I got the impression that it was, from general statement from some sites, maybe due to inaccurate early marketing communique:

"Housed in a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body that is nearly identical in design to the 30D's..."

http://www.popphoto.com/camera_revie...n-eos_40d.html

But clarified by owners:

"The Canon 40D does not have "weather sealing throughout its body". It only has minor weather sealing in three locations: the battery door, the CF card door, and the hot-shoe connection for the flash. The buttons, dials, screen, etc. are not weather-sealed, unlike higher-end models like the 1D series."

Well, weatherproofing is as strong as it's weakest link.

So partial weatherproofing means no weatherproofing - just pure marketing BS.

The weatherproofing is as good as their anti dust... seen any pictures of a Canon 1Ds getting sprayed with water and beer and dropped in snow, (according Ray from Aussie) into the river?

Well... there you have it... BS marketing, just like noise... pft...

Well, if there's one good thing is that you don't need to PS skin.

It comes out looking nice and smooth...

Usually Oly's users were very seldom or rarely been mentioned at all in the magazine
What you get most were C & N users.
Was surprised to see this article in the mag and the guy specially mentioning his E1

Yeah... but could also be a failed design. It could be possible at the last minute they found out that the weather-proofing design cannot make it before market release of the product (eg. 40D), and decided to downgrade it as 'partial weatherproofing'. Can claim about something... better than nothing, I guess.
