What if you use it with other lenses? Maybe it's the 50mm f/1.4 that's soft near biggest aperture or has front/back-focusing issues.

Perhaps a photo of what you're talking about would be useful.

You'll have to do an exact side-by-side with almost zero variation between samples on both bodies, crop and process the same exact way for the comparison to be valid.

Did you compare the 2 cameras side by side with the same lighting and subject and settings? If not, you could have switched the cameras and come to the opposite conclusion. What I am saying is that the 40D may have been used in a situation where the lighting and colours were dull and the picture had shallow depth and perhaps with slow shutter speed to make matter worse at max aperture and the D300 may have been in another situation where the subject was in focus some distance away from the OOF background, with a nice F2.8. Also, the particular D300 may have been set to sharpen and saturate more.
There are so many variables - to come to a quick conclusion that the D300 is sharper and more 3D just like that is inconclusive. Anyway it is my firm opinion that sharpness is a function more of the photographer, the lens and proper focussing than the body itself. With my 300D and my 40D, using 10-22, 17-40, 50 1.8 Mk I and 85 1.8 lenses, I have taken many super sharp photos with nice saturated colours. IMO, it cannot get any sharper, especially with the prime lenses set at optimal apertures with no camera shake and proper lighting. |

and are you comparing between LCD views? The D300 will whip the 40D's LCD if that's the case.

The 50 f1.4 is more than capable. I suggest you find out what went wrong before getting any L lenses. Without knowing what happened, its just a waste of money.
