Hi. I just got myself recently a Canon EOS 300 film slr. I'm enjoying shooting it with my 28-90 kit lens. And today a friend of mine brought his Canon EOS 300D and we decided to switch lens. My kit lens can be mounted onto his but I cant seem to mount his on mine.
So right now I also plan to get a Canon DSLR (maybe 2-3 months time). So what type of lens can I actually get so that I could switch lens between the 2 bodies from time to time. Also which DSLR body is advisable for me to get? I have in mind the 400D since I'm rather new to SLRs. I have in mind the EF 50mm f/1.4 lens. thanks. |

Your friend has a 300D with a kit lens? Chances are, it's an EF-S lens.
EF-S lenses are physically incompatible with EF mount only camera bodies like EOS film bodies, and any EOS digital body before the 20D (10D, D30, D60). To ensure cross-compatibality, quick and easy answer is: stick to EF lenses only (don't get EF-S lenses) and if you go digital EOS later, UNLESS both of you have EF-S compatible digital EOS bods, but then, you won't be able to use the EF-S lenses with your film cameras. Only if you buy the kit. You can buy the body only and use your existing EF lens. You can add additional lenses and as long as they are not EF-S they can be used on both the film and digital bodies.

Yeah. EF-S lenses are for 1.6x DSLR bodies and will not be able to mount on your Film SLR. But both EOS SLRs and DSLRs accept EF mounts. The 50mm f/1.4 will definitely be able to mount on both your EOS 300 and your DSLR.
Guess it would be logical for you to get a 400D body and just get EF lenses from there. You may find that your 28-90mm would not be wide angle enough for your 400D though.
