Anyone got any comparison between the full frame 5D vs the new 40D on High ISO of 3200 or above? I heard the price of 5D is pretty good in anticipation of 7D? Wonder I should get the 5D or 40D?

Personally, I won't use anything over ISO 640 on the 5D. It really depends on your tolerance level for noise. Heven't tried the 40D yet but I would imagine it to be slightly than the 5D.

I used the 5D at ISO 800 all throughout an event once. Fairly clean files, except in the middle dark to darkest shadows and where ever there was spot/tungsten lights (all the warmer tone areas) did the noise appear, but in 4R prints, you would not notice them.
The noise became noticeable only when I cropped for S8Rs and above, but it was nothing that a very very small amount of noise reduction could not manage very easily with the subjects still looking natural (aka, not plasticky). I tried the 40D at ISO 3200 inside CP before, and yes, the noise is apparent even in 4R files, but what's nice about it it that the noise pattern looks 'tight'. Sorry, I don't know how to explain it in individual chroma channels etc. The 40D files were also quite amenable to noise reduction post work, so either way, I doubt if you would find major issues with noise. The only times the noise might be more apparent with the 40D (as compared to the 5D) might be incorrectly exposed files, and when you're dealing with deep deep shadows and strong tungsten and or halogen class lights. At least that's what I feel. More experienced techs please help correct my opinion(s) or help TS. CHEERS! |

if u set ur exposure correctly, the noise will be minimise even at 1600...

I think the noise level between the 5D and the 40D will not be very much different, although both bodies are using different processors. Canon has made major improvements on noise level since their 20D, and printing on 4R won't have much difference.
For me, it depends when to shoot on high ISOs. Sometimes, the noise injected using high ISO really adds to to mood of the pic. |

No offence, den wats the use of shooting with a 5D? I whack 1600 on my 30D and its still consider clean when you meter the exposure correctly.

Erm..... not everyone uses the 5D because of its ISO performance. I thought the other advantages of it is obvious. Also, perception of "clean" varies.

Duno about 5D, but on the 30D, the inbetween ISOs (ie not full ISO stops of 100, 200, 400, 800 etc.) actually do have a higher noise level.

I haven't tried that on the 5D yet but concern is really if I can see noise from 10x15 prints which is why I stick to ISO 640 and below.

Ahh. So the print is the gauge. Is there a marked difference between ISO 640 and 800?

At 10x15, I can detect some differences. That's why ISO 640 is the threshold for me.

If noise is your concern, then its probably a better choice.

Hi camera23,
TS is asking for high ISO images from the Canon 40D, not the Nikon D40. Not sure if you've got that mixed up. Also, the first (RAW) photo you posted - which camera was this from? |
