which type of zoom? standard zoom/telezoom?

Telezoom I suggest a new Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. IQ is decent and has IS for such a budget price (cheapest is 360 from OP I heard).

Standard zoom...I suggest a 2nd hand Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. I've used the lens for at least half a yr and find it a fine lens for the price. The wide aperture would be helpful in not-very-dark situations. Rather light too. Other alternatives are the Canon 17-40mm or 17-55mm which is certainly beyond budget. Or just stick with the sucky 18-55mm non-IS kit lens

How about the EF-S 55-250mm IS Some CSer got it at $360

Very value for money

More information on that lens can be found at

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=330537

I'm using a all-rounder 3rd party lens by Tamron 18-200

some compromise on IQ but good enough for everyday use

Zoom lens at what focal length? 18-55 (more for landscape and group photos)? 55-200 (far range shots and easier to take candids)? or 18-200?

Do you own the kit lens 18-55? If so then u might wanna try the 55-200mm IS for telephoto shots. If not try pump in more $$ to get better lens like tamron 17-50mm or 40D kit 17-85 IS. This range of zoom lens will be used more often so it's worth to get better ones.

I wouldnt recommend the 17-85. In fact, i'd recommend the 18-55 IS over that as the new 18-55 IS is very much sharper than both the old 18-55 and the 17-85.

TS should start with the 18-55 IS first then proceed from there...

hi to all,

well actually i've just bought a tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 from a friend of mine just yesterday. well, i don't own the kit lens but i'm considering buying the 18-55mm IS within the next 2 year. because with the x1.6 crop a 28mm would be a 44mm so i would need a wider lens.

I agree. The 18-55 IS is a highly reccommended buy for its improved optics and IS over its non-IS predecessor.

You should have thought about that before you bought the lens, no?

Instead, a purchase of a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 might have been a better choice.

Agree. 17-50 better choice. But now that you have the 28-75 (fine lens BTW), you may want to consider the normal nonIS kit lens when you need the wide end. costs only $60-80 and it is not that bad when you stop it down to 5.6/6.3 at the 18-24 end of things.

Of course, getting a 10-22 for $850 second hand will give you a nice super wide to medium telephoto range but I suppose budget is the issue.

I believe these lenses mentioned are all out of the TS's budget right?

With the 300-450 budget, get the 18-55mm IS.

Perhaps TS wanted a mid-tele option >50mm?
