This is what I got from Canon (S)'s service centre. So Canon (S) feels that all the US/UK hype about replacing the sub-mirror assembly for the now-famous AI Servo AF problem is unnecessary?
![]() Thank you for your enquiry. We provide Free repair as mentioned on our Canon website regarding the AI servo continuous shooting but there is no need to replace the sub-mirror assembly only calibration is perform on the sub-mirror assembly AF sensor. As there is quite a number of customers in our waiting list. We will contact you soon to make arrangement for the camera to bring in to our Customer Service Centre at Keppel Bay Tower. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Have a Nice Day ! Regards ME Domestic Group Canon Singapore Pte Ltd DID : (65) 67963206 e-mail : xxxxxx_xxx@canon.com.sg |

By any chance your serial number is one of those in the 4350 cameras that already has the fix? Coz mine is, and i'm curious to know about it too. Thanks!

![]() From what I've read, units in US and Canada had their sub-mirror assemblies replaced besides the adjustments and calibration. Why is it that we don't need to get the sub-mirror assembly replaced in Singapore?Last edited by Papilio; 27th December 2007 at 10:50 PM. |

It looks like they are just doing some calibration. I sent mine to CSC and when it came back the work done was "Electrical adjustment" - they also said they did not change any parts. I guess I need to send it again and insist the part replacement.

Also, if the new units shipped out have the 'new' sub-mirror assembly, then those of us who own the 'defective' units will be short-changed and these units will have a lower re-sale value if indeed we want to sell the camera off later. Note that in the US sites, we have 1D Mk III owners reporting that Canon extended their warranty by another year after the replacement of the sub-mirror assembly. Did your "Electrical adjustment" come with a renewed warranty? |

And yes, there is statement in the service report about the warranty: "Extended one year warranty from the date of repair on AF issus"

I got a call from Canon engineer who explained to me that there wont be need to do any parts replacement due to sub-mirror fix but they just do some adjustment of the sub-mirror. I didn't fully understand what he was explaining but what I understood is that the sub-mirror is slightly in-correct position and it is adjusted in correct position. According to Canon engineer it takes 1-2 hours to adjust it to the correct position.
I'm not sure where I could find accurate information what they are doing in USA while fixing the affected cameras. However, in Rob Galbraith's page (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/mul...8740-9068-9198) there is a copy of one service report. It is written in the report "AF Mirror Mechanism adjustment". It looks like it might be same what they are doing in USA. Unfortunately I haven't had opportunity to test the AI Servo so far after the adjustment, so I cannot comment did it help or not.

I'd be more than abit miffed if Canon elsewhere were doing replacements and warranty extensions but we're getting the short end of the stick here in sg.

Some forum bro did a review a few weeks back on this issue.
His findings were that the AI Servo was "mostly" in focus, to the tune of 8 shots in focus for every 10 shots made. This concurs with Rob Galbraith's 8500 essay on their finding of the sub-mirror fix, to which Canon remained quiet. To the pros out there, is this acceptable?

The service personnel insist that they will only do an "electronic re-calibration" but no replacement of the sub-mirror assembly is required. The lady that I spoke to said that they will evaluate and adjust accordingly, and so far, of all the units sent in, only one unit was so bad as to require a replacement of the sub-mirror assembly, but the rest only needed "re-calibrations".
![]() No point arguing with the counter staff. It's the management that we need to write to. From what I can see on the internet and forums, the foreign Canon service centres are doing a complete replacement. (If there are updates to this, and only re-calibrations are done, I have not come across any). Yatlapball, from what they've done so far, and I believe other 1D Mk III owners who have been to CSC can confirm, they require you to send in your cam on Thurs/Fri and they return it to you on Monday. It's still a weekend of downtime as far as I know. |

![]() "Unfortunately" my shooting requirements rarely use the AI Servo, and I've not had any problems with the single shot AF mode. In that mode, the cam works superbly. However, if the AI Servo has a problem, Canon should do what is consistent with their service centres around the world. Otherwise owners here in Singapore will be short-changed. ![]() |

I have been using the MkIII for a few months now. Been shooting jets mainly, using both One Shot and AF Servo. Have been getting sharp pictures almost every time, and not much issue with the focus. It has been accurate and very fast.
Well maybe my MkIII is one of those 4000+ bodies that need no replacement according to Canon. But one thing is for sure, I'm very pleased with the photos that I've been achieving with the MkIII. Absolutely awesome. |
