Default "Kopi Session" Agenda Request Thread

Going to make this a sticky thread.

The purpose of this thread is to allow the community to suggest the topics you want to share or find out more since the "kopi sessions" are now happening regularly on a monthly basis. You can request for technical topics like "how to maximise my RAW file" to simple things like "how to compose a shot for sunset" and this is will brought up and discussed at the next kopi session (no promises, sometimes there are topics which the regular organisers cannot answer ourselves and needs time to look for experts on the subject matter, ok?)

So... fire away!

something i would like to learn from future sessions. macro setup with focus on flash techniques, approaching insects and tripod / monopod considerations.

There are no stupid questions. But sometimes it helps to also pick up a book and learn the basics first. National Library has brought in a lot of new photography reference books that is very helpful for those who have just entered the world of photography.

more like something to avoid buying lense then realize not going to be of much use.
Like theoritically macro lense are for macro (flower, insect etc), but 50mm/f2 can also be used for portrait, but then what is its drawback for both application?
What about those long macro lense?
What is the difference between long macro lense and long tele lense?

What we need is more like general common sense only obtained by those working in the field and doing it very often (can be considered "sifu" lah).

We are just wannabe n00b, and since we are not earning $ (let alone $$$) with the photo, then have to as much as possible need to get the most appropriate lense or else for married guys, must spend more $$ to get the most comfortable sofa lah.

some qns to ask but i might not able to attend....

1) can the FL50r or fl36r slaves (the IR detector facing away) be trigger by FL-50 with omni bounce using E-3 of course?

2) what is the correct way to use af in e-3.
a) track a moving subject
b) track a jumping subject

3) some of the setting s**ks, can we request some change to the settings for the next firmware or a version in which we can choose to select due to own preference. something like the slow sync issues on P & A -modes that i have mentioned much earlier on (i have tried with my external qflash and it failed to fire as well using M-mode which is slow makes it very bad for certain fast action photography).

can we post some of the past "kopi sessions'" discussions on a thread, something for a noobie like me to learn.

1) Exposure metering (Spot, centre, multi... EV compensation)

2) Flash techiniques (proper fill flash techinique)

3) Off camera flash
(think "strobist" )

A note to everyone who have posted :

Thank you for posting and keep the requests coming in. Over time, we will compile all these information and within our capabilities and resources, we will try to organise folks with experience in the subject matter to come share their thoughts and expertise. Some might take a little more time, some might be easier based on the collective resources of the community.

If you know someone who can answer the request posted here, please hook them up to me or drakon09 so that we can arrange for him to come and share these information and help the community grow in the photography skills.

Some of the more experienced photographers might have noticed that with the 4/3 system, perspective control is different with standard 35mm photography and therefore it is almost like relearning to use a DSLR altogether to take the best images. Something that we will explore also, with the help of people and resources around us.

The kopi sessions can hopefully in time, get upgraded to regular seminars and masterclasses with folks coming in from various backgrounds to share and help one another.

So keep posting your requests and thoughts.

Thank you everyone.

Not sure if anyone managed to get around with this issue i have with E-3...

Focusing on a name card with normal room lighting can be a challenge if you are trying to focus on the logo (centre focus, S-af in either small or normal) with some words by the sides. The AF have a tendency to lock on the words which has the higher contrast than the logo, btw the words are not exactly in the centre focus point. The focusing algorithm seems to be totally different from the older models.

I would be interested in a discussion/demonstration of the new wireless flash capability on the E3 with the new 50R and 36R.

I would like to see how some of our more expereinced members with studio and portait expereince would set them up for "at home" portrait shoots. ie how many flashes would be optimum, how close would you place them, which angles to subject etc

I believe this new feature has the potential to allow Oly shooters to recreate a real "studio" feel if used correctly.

Microcosm, please share with us how you
- manage noise (thinking process)
- minimise noise (not picture taking)
- remove/edit/fix noise (post production)

The context here is concert photoshoot with high contrast and low ambient light.

Not in your feb kopi session lah, some other time when I am in Singapore, OK?
Thanks.

I notice many of us are talking about "how to use this item", "what is the capability of this item". All these, if used properly, lead to a good photo. However, do we use these items to create an image or do we create an image using these items?

I seldom see prints nowadays, and this is the by-product of digital photography. Constructive Criticism can lead to better images. However, showing the pictures online do not justify one's intention on what he/she wants to present to the viewer.

We should have the sessions on how to create a properly exposed, composed using the available items, ideas and techniques. This should be with prints to showcase one's creation.
