yes i have, but would it be right to assume that the optics for the hsm and the non-hsm version would be the same? this one i have no idea, hence, just wondering.

I do believe they are identical.

From the Sigma website, it states on both lens info pages that the lens is made up of "15 Elements in 13 Groups".

thanks for bringing that point up! So looks like the non-HSM is a little wider...I probably wouldn't have known anyway!
For people who are interested, my recent quotations obtained were:

J316: $840 local
Old MS:$840 local
Lords: $775 (must confirm whether local or grey)
OP:$630 grey

call cash price IIRC. I'm contemplating grey or local.
